Independent journalist Nick Shirley exposed massive fraud happening on Tim Walz's watch in Minnesota.
The mainstream media went into meltdown mode trying to protect Democrats from the scandal.
And a Politico reporter just made one shocking statement that has ICE demanding he be held accountable.
Politico senior legal reporter fantasizes about violence against citizen journalists
Josh Gerstein serves as Politico's "Senior Legal Affairs Reporter" covering the intersection of law and politics.
But Gerstein apparently doesn't understand basic legal principles.
He suggested Tuesday night that citizen journalists investigating Somali daycare fraud in Minnesota could be shot under stand-your-ground laws.
"At some point, the amateur effort to knock on doors of home daycares intersects with robust stand-your-ground laws," Gerstein posted on X.¹
The post appeared aimed at 23-year-old conservative journalist Nick Shirley, whose viral video investigation documented empty daycare centers in Minnesota receiving millions in taxpayer funds.
Shirley's 43-minute video showing visits to nearly a dozen facilities has been viewed more than 127 million times across platforms.²
One location featured a building with a misspelled "Quality Learing Center" sign that received $4 million in state payments despite appearing largely inactive.³
Vice President JD Vance praised Shirley's work as "far more useful journalism" than Pulitzer Prize winners, while FBI Director Kash Patel called the Minnesota fraud "just the tip of a very large iceberg."⁴
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the Justice Department has charged 98 individuals — 85 of Somali descent — with 60 already found guilty in court.⁵
ICE accuses Politico reporter of inciting violence against federal agents
Immigration and Customs Enforcement's official X account blasted Gerstein for what they characterized as a threat against investigators.
"You would think a 'Senior Legal Affairs Reporter' for POLITICO would know better than to tweet something inciting violence against federal agents," ICE responded.⁶
The backlash exposed Gerstein's ignorance of the law he's supposedly an expert on.
Minnesota doesn't have stand-your-ground laws.
The state actually has a "duty to retreat" requirement before using force, according to the United States Concealed Carry Association.⁷
Federalist editor Mollie Hemingway dismantled Gerstein's legal analysis point by point.
"1) Stand Your Ground does not permit the murder of door knockers 2) MN is not a SYG state 3) in no world should Somali fraudsters be encouraged to murder taxpaying US citizens for doing the journalism well-funded reporters refuse to do," Hemingway posted.⁸
Federalist CEO Sean Davis accused Gerstein of calling "for Somalis to shoot and murder anyone who knocks on the doors of their businesses."⁹
Tennessee Representative Jeremy Faison blasted Politico for tolerating such dangerous rhetoric from its reporters.
"@politico appears perfectly fine with its reporters insinuating that journalists simply doing their jobs could lawfully be shot and killed," Faison wrote.¹⁰
Gerstein's desperate damage control falls flat
After more than 10,000 hostile responses flooded his mentions, Gerstein tried walking back his statement.
"To observe that something is likely to happen or there's a serious risk of it happening is not to advocate for it happening," he claimed.¹¹
The explanation satisfied nobody.
Fox News columnist David Marcus asked point-blank: "Are you advising Somalis to shoot amateur reporters for knocking on their door?"¹²
The White House's RapidResponse47 account called Gerstein a "sicko," while political activist Chris Rufo demanded Politico "come get your guy who is advocating the murder of American journalists."¹³
This isn't just a reporter making a stupid comment.
Gerstein's post came as progressive threats against mainstream Americans have multiplied since Trump's first election in 2016.
Those threats turned deadly when a sniper murdered conservative leader Charlie Kirk in September.
Shirley reported that Somali migrants actually stalked him during his investigation of the daycare centers.¹⁴
Now a supposedly credible legal reporter at a major outlet suggested those investigating fraud should expect to be shot.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem deployed HSI and ICE agents to Minneapolis following Shirley's video to conduct a "massive" investigation into the fraud allegations.¹⁵
The scandal has put Governor Tim Walz's administration under national scrutiny after a federal prosecutor alleged in December that half or more of approximately $18 billion in federal funds allocated to Minnesota since 2018 may have been stolen.¹⁶
Walz has defended his oversight despite the mounting evidence of systemic fraud happening under his watch.
Gerstein graduated from Harvard and spent decades covering legal affairs for ABC News, The New York Sun, and now Politico.
Yet this veteran reporter suggested knocking on the door of a business could justify lethal force.
The establishment media's desperation to protect Democrats from the Minnesota fraud scandal has reached new lows.
Reporters like Gerstein would rather fantasize about violence against citizen journalists than do their actual jobs investigating government corruption.
