Senate Democrats just handed Republicans their biggest ammunition yet for the midterms.
Chuck Schumer thought he could blow up government funding over ICE shooting two protesters in Minneapolis and walk away looking like the hero.
Now Anna Paulina Luna's telling him exactly what it's going to cost him to turn the lights back on – and he's not going to like it one bit.
Schumer's Government Shutdown 2026 Plan Just Backfired
The Florida congresswoman dropped the hammer Thursday evening.
If Schumer wants to end this shutdown he engineered, there's one price – the SAVE Act gets attached to whatever spending deal comes back to the House.
"I know for a fact that if the SAVE Act is a standalone vote in the Senate, just like every other good piece of legislation, it's going to die," Luna told Fox News Digital.
She's not bluffing.
Luna's got enough House Republicans ready to tank any bill Schumer sends over that doesn't include Chip Roy's election integrity law.
The legislation passed the House back in April 2025 by a 220-208 vote, requiring proof of citizenship – passport, birth certificate, or REAL ID – before anyone registers to vote in federal elections.
It also forces states to scrub noncitizens off voter rolls and lets American citizens sue election officials who ignore the law.
Four Democrats even voted for it – Ed Case, Henry Cuellar, Jared Golden, and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez – which tells you everything about how popular it is outside the Beltway bubble.
But then it hit the Senate and died the death every good conservative bill dies – Schumer buried it without a vote for nine straight months.
Now Luna's making him pay for it.
Democrats Blocked DHS Funding Over Minneapolis ICE Shootings
Here's what triggered this whole mess.
Federal immigration officers shot and killed two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis during protests against Trump's deportation surge.
Never mind that ICE was in Minneapolis rounding up criminal illegal aliens – the kind with rap sheets longer than a CVS receipt.
Never mind that Trump's surge netted thousands of convicted criminals who Biden invited in and let roam free.
Democrats saw their opening and took it.
They walked away from a bipartisan deal to fund the entire federal government through September 2026 unless Republicans stripped all DHS funding out of the package.
They'll shut down veterans services, transportation, health programs – all of it – unless ICE agents get defunded and handcuffed.
The "compromise" Schumer cut with Trump funds everything except DHS through September, then gives DHS a measly two-week extension so Democrats can force "guardrails" on immigration enforcement.
Those guardrails?
Ban masks for ICE agents, force them to wear body cameras, end "roving patrols," and require judicial warrants before entering homes.
Basically turn ICE agents into sitting ducks for the cartels and activist mobs who've been doxxing them and threatening their families.
How The SAVE Act Became Luna's Weapon In Election Integrity Fight
Now comes the part where Schumer discovers he's not as smart as he thinks.
The Senate deal has to pass the House when they return Monday.
Speaker Mike Johnson needs nearly every Republican vote to get it through a procedural "rule vote" – the gatekeeping mechanism that allows floor debate.
Luna only needs a handful of conservatives to sink it.
"It's definitely a number that's big enough to completely halt all floor proceedings," she told Fox News Digital, declining to name exactly how many Republicans she's got locked in.
Rep. William Timmons of South Carolina is already on board.
"If the Democrats can play this game and shut the government down yet again, I think that we need to hold their feet to the fire," Timmons said.
Here's Schumer's nightmare scenario playing out in real time.
He can't pass the SAVE Act – his base would revolt if he required proof of citizenship to vote.
But he can't keep the government funded without House Republicans, and Luna just told him the price of admission.
If Johnson puts the bill up for a regular vote and Luna tanks the rule, the partial shutdown that starts Saturday gets extended indefinitely.
Johnson could try to bypass the rule vote entirely using "suspension" – a fast-track mechanism that requires two-thirds support instead of a simple majority.
But that would need massive Democratic support, and Luna's betting Schumer won't give his members permission to vote for a bill that funds DHS without his precious "guardrails."
"I don't think that they would do that," Luna said of the suspension route. "That would be really problematic for them."
Voter ID Battle Sets Up 2026 Midterm Election Showdown
Trump urged Congress earlier this month to pass national voter ID before the 2026 midterms.
He even suggested renaming the SAVE Act to the "Save America Act."
Now Luna's doing exactly what Trump asked – forcing Democrats to choose between keeping the government open and protecting election integrity.
This is the kind of fight Republicans have been begging leadership to pick for years.
Democrats shut down the government because they think ICE is being "too aggressive" deporting criminal illegal aliens.
Republicans are saying fine, but you're going to pass voter ID first.
Every single day this shutdown drags on is another day Democrats have to explain why they'd rather keep the government closed than require proof of citizenship to vote in American elections.
Luna knows it.
Schumer knows it.
The only question is which one blinks first – and right now, Luna's the one holding all the cards.
