Bobby Kennedy once sawed the head off a beached whale and drove it home strapped to the roof of his minivan.
Friday night at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, the president decided everyone in the room needed to know that.
Trump had one joke that brought down the house – and you need to hear exactly what he said about the beef tenderloin.
Road-to-Table Fine Dining at the Waldorf Astoria
The setup was perfect.
Trump looked out at the packed ballroom at Washington's Waldorf Astoria, Kennedy seated right there in front of him, and praised the evening's beef tenderloin as "very special beef."
Then he explained why.
"Bobby Kennedy, who's right here, personally ran over the cow in his car," Trump told the crowd. "Boom. And he cut it up and he brought it here for you to eat tonight. So it's very fresh."
Multiple outlets called it the biggest laugh of the night – and in a speech that ran over an hour, that's saying something.
Trump wasn't done.
He floated a menu item the White House had apparently rejected, turning to Kennedy's wife, actress Cheryl Hines, who was seated right beside the HHS Secretary.
"Bobby also suggested an appetizer featuring his favorite cut of male raccoon roadkill," Trump said. "But we drew the line at that, Cheryl. We said, 'No, we're not going to do that.'"
Kennedy laughed along as the crowd lit up around him.
The Backstory Is Even Better Than the Joke
The bit landed because every single person in that room already knew the backstory.
In 2014, Kennedy found a bear cub that had been hit by a car in upstate New York during a falconing trip.
He loaded it into his vehicle, planning to skin it and put the meat in his refrigerator.
Then he went to dinner at Peter Luger Steakhouse.
Then he realized he had a flight to catch.
With the dead bear still in his car and no time to deal with it, Kennedy drove to Central Park and staged the carcass to look like a cyclist had killed it.

It made national headlines.
The mystery baffled New Yorkers for a decade – until Kennedy himself revealed what happened in a 2024 video with Roseanne Barr.
That wasn't the end of it.
A biography published earlier this year – RFK Jr.: The Fall and Rise by New York Post journalist Isabel Vincent – unearthed diary entries from 2001 in which Kennedy wrote that he pulled over on I-684, in front of his parked minivan, to remove organs from a roadkill raccoon while his family waited inside.
"I've been picking up roadkill my whole life," Kennedy told reporters after the bear story broke. "I have a freezer full of it."
The whale was a whole other chapter.
Kennedy's daughter Kick told a magazine in 2012 that when she was six years old, her father grabbed a chainsaw and sprinted to a Massachusetts beach after hearing a whale had washed ashore – cut off its head, then lashed it to the roof of the family minivan for the five-hour drive back to New York.
Kick recalled that every time they accelerated on the highway, whale juice poured in through the car windows.
Trump Closed With Full Bobby Kennedy Endorsement
After the jokes, Trump did something the press corps didn't expect: he meant every word of what came next.
He called Kennedy "a piece of work" and "a very different kind of person" – then looked the room in the eye and told them Kennedy has exactly what it takes to run the Department of Health and Human Services.
"He's smart and he loves the country, and he wants people to be made to feel good," Trump said. "He's doing a fantastic job. Thank you, Bobby."
The press will ignore that part.
They always do.

Kennedy has made red meat – and specifically beef tallow – a centerpiece of his Make America Healthy Again agenda, pushing to get seed oils out of restaurant fryers and real American beef back on the table.
The same media that spent years mocking him for picking up roadkill is now eating his policy agenda for dinner whether they admit it or not.
Trump made beef the punchline Friday night.
Kennedy walked away with the biggest laugh of the speech.
That's not a coincidence – that's two men who know exactly who they are, comfortable enough to laugh at themselves in front of a room full of people who spent years trying to destroy them both.
The press corps paid $500 a plate to sit there and watch it.
