Mount Sinai Shut Its Doors on Medicaid Patients the Same Month Zohran Mamdani Sued Donald Trump for Protecting Illegal Aliens on Welfare

Oct 14, 2026

Mount Sinai just turned away working-class New Yorkers who paid into Medicaid their entire lives.

At the same time, Mayor Zohran Mamdani filed a lawsuit to make sure illegal aliens keep their welfare benefits.

Connect those two facts and you understand everything about how Zohran Mamdani's New York actually works.

Mount Sinai Quietly Closed the Door

On August 1, 2026, Mount Sinai – one of the most prestigious hospitals in the world – stopped accepting new patients on Medicaid.

Not illegal aliens.

American citizens – the working poor, the disabled, seniors on fixed incomes – who played by the rules and paid into this system for decades.

Mount Sinai pulled the notice from its website only after reporters found it.

A hospital spokesperson confirmed the change was a cost-saving measure, citing revenue losses from the volume of Medicaid patients it already carries.

What the spokesperson did not say out loud: Mount Sinai openly advertises on its own website that it provides "no-cost, confidential health care" to undocumented workers, without regard to their legal status or insurance coverage.

It brags about this.

The math is not complicated.

The hospital absorbs the cost of treating illegals for free, runs out of Medicaid revenue, and then locks the door on the American citizens who fund the program in the first place.

That's not a healthcare policy.

That's a wealth transfer.

Mamdani Was Already in Front of the Cameras

Six weeks after Mount Sinai shut its doors, Zohran Mamdani stood at a podium alongside New York Attorney General Letitia James and announced a lawsuit against the Trump administration.

The target: the public charge rule.

The rule is straightforward – if you've been living on American welfare and you want a green card, that counts against you.

Forty-seven percent of immigrant-headed households in the United States used at least one traditional form of welfare between 2021 and 2025.

The comparable number for American citizen-headed households is 28 percent – a 19-point gap that New York taxpayers are covering.

Mamdani declared from the podium that "cruelty is not how we choose to govern."

The Department of Homeland Security called his lawsuit what it actually is.

"Let's get this straight," a DHS spokesperson said. "Sanctuary states are terrified they will lose federal funds because hundreds of thousands of illegals and noncitizens might remove themselves from American welfare programs."

That's the tell.

Mamdani is not protecting immigrants.

He is protecting New York City's federal funding stream – and he knows exactly what he's doing.

What $12 Billion Buys in Zohran's New York

New York City has spent an estimated $12 billion over three years on housing, food, healthcare, and services for illegal aliens who walked across the border and were waved in.

New York also quietly expanded full Medicaid to undocumented residents 65 and older in January 2024.

That's $12 billion that didn't go to the emergency room wait times your family sits through at a public hospital.

That's $12 billion that didn't go to keeping Mount Sinai's doors open to the working-class New Yorker with a Medicaid card who never asked for anything except a fair shot at the system they funded.

Mamdani told reporters that "people could die" if illegal immigrants lose access to welfare.

He said nothing about the Americans who lost access to Mount Sinai because his city chose to fund illegals instead.

The Pattern Is the Point

This is not an accident or an oversight.

Every sanctuary city in America has made the same trade: protect illegals, absorb the cost, and when the money runs out, tell the citizens to find somewhere else.

Chicago did it.

San Francisco did it.

Now New York is doing it under a mayor who ran as an open socialist – whose entire platform was built on spending other people's money on people who have no legal right to be here.

The Trump administration's public charge rule doesn't throw anyone out of the country.

It says: if you want to become a permanent resident of the United States, you shouldn't have spent years living off the American taxpayer to get there.

That is not cruelty.

That is the most basic definition of national self-interest.

Mamdani sued to stop it.

The working-class New Yorkers who can no longer get into Mount Sinai are the ones paying for that lawsuit.
