What This American Health Economist Told Margaret Brennan is Something CBS Didn’t Want America to Hear

Aug 12, 2026

Margaret Brennan spent years telling Americans what to think about COVID.

Now the man Biden's government blacklisted for disagreeing sat across from her on live television.

What Trump’s head of NIH told Margaret Brennan is something CBS didn't want America to hear.

The Doctor They Tried to Silence Is Running the NIH

Jay Bhattacharya was not supposed to be in that chair.

In 2020, he co-authored the Great Barrington Declaration – the document calling school closures harmful and recommending targeted protection for the vulnerable instead.

Francis Collins, then NIH director, immediately emailed Anthony Fauci demanding a "quick and devastating published takedown."

Twitter placed Bhattacharya on a secret blacklist the day he joined the platform.

The Biden White House then pressured Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms to suppress his posts – a coordinated censorship campaign later exposed by the Twitter Files and confirmed in federal court.

He was called dangerous, fringe, a public health menace.

Five years later, Donald Trump made him director of the NIH.

What He Said on CBS That Made Brennan Cut Him Off

Brennan opened the Face the Nation interview by invoking the 2025 CDC shooting – a tragic attack where a gunman fired over 100 bullets into CDC headquarters, killing DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose.

The shooter's father said his son was fixated on the COVID vaccine and believed it had made him suicidal.

Brennan's angle was obvious: blame vaccine misinformation.

Bhattacharya redirected immediately.

"There's a loss of public trust in public health that happened in part because of a lot of – frankly, even on this network and on other networks – there was a particular single point of view put across during the COVID pandemic," he said. "The school closures are probably the number one thing that—"

Brennan cut him off.

"This is not a productive line of claims," she said. "We covered COVID in depth on this program, like no other Sunday show did."

That is the tell.

A journalist confident in her network's COVID coverage does not call criticism "not productive."

She calls it wrong – and then proves it wrong.

Brennan had no rebuttal, only a command to stop talking.

Bhattacharya didn't stop.

"The reason why you have this problem in public trust is because what happened in 2020 has not yet been addressed," he told her.

Then he named Biden directly.

"Biden, for instance, censored me," he said – and when Brennan tried to pivot, he pressed harder: "People lost their jobs, Margaret, because the Biden administration censored people and said, look, you can't even talk about the COVID vaccine harms."

Brennan's response was to pivot immediately to RFK Jr.

The White House Did Not Let CBS Walk Away Clean

The Biden administration's censorship of Bhattacharya is not in dispute.

A federal appeals court ruled the White House, the surgeon general, the CDC, and the FBI likely violated the First Amendment by pressuring social media companies to suppress COVID skeptics – including Bhattacharya.

The court ordered those agencies to stop coercing platforms to remove or suppress protected speech.

The Twitter Files showed Bhattacharya was placed on a Trends Blacklist the day he joined the platform – before he had done anything at all.

Stanford's own dean asked him to stop speaking to the press.

All of this happened because he said school closures hurt children – a position that is now scientific consensus.

The White House did not let CBS pretend otherwise.

"The Fake News media openly supported unscientific lockdowns during the pandemic era and openly supported censoring anyone who dared to question those lockdowns," White House spokesman Kush Desai said. "The Fake News media's continued inability to show an ounce of humility and contrition is exactly why public trust in the mainstream media is even worse than public trust in public health bodies."

That is the full loop.

CBS helped destroy trust in public health institutions by suppressing correct information.

CBS then invited the man they helped suppress to ask why people don't trust those institutions.

And when he started to answer honestly, Brennan told him it was "not a productive line of claims."

The Left Still Has Not Apologized for Any of It

American children lost years of school.

Millions of workers lost jobs over vaccine mandates that courts later struck down.

The federal government ran an organized campaign to silence doctors who turned out to be right.

Not one anchor who told you lockdowns were science has corrected the record.

Not one journalist who called the Great Barrington Declaration "dangerous" has apologized.

Bhattacharya put it plainly: "If you want to talk about public trust, you have to embrace that fully. You can't just talk about it in a narrow, political way."

CBS couldn't do it.

They never could.
