The West Virginia Democrat Party just lost 37,000 voters to the GOP.
Their own chairman stepped up to explain it away.
Read what Mike Pushkin said – because the math he's hiding is more damaging than the numbers he shared.
The Data Pushkin Doesn't Want You to Do
West Virginia Secretary of State Kris Warner released the registration numbers last week, and they are not close.
Since January 2024, 16,910 Democrats switched their registration to Republican.
Another 20,003 voters sitting as unaffiliated made a choice – and they chose the GOP.
That's 36,913 people walking toward Republicans in just over two years.
Pushkin tried to muddy the picture by pointing out that 12,299 Democrats left the party to become unaffiliated, and 7,559 Republicans did the same.
Fair enough – some voters are leaving both parties.
Here's what he left out: of all the unaffiliated voters who then decided to pick a party, 20,003 went Republican and only 5,211 went Democrat.
That is a four-to-one GOP advantage among people who actually made a decision.
Pushkin called this "a broad change across the state, not a one-way shift."
The man is a mathematician the way Biden was a border czar.
What 74 Percent Looked Like
At the height of Democratic dominance in West Virginia, 74 percent of the state's voters were registered Democrats.
Coal miners went home to Jesus and the union hall – and both of them voted Democrat.
The United Mine Workers delivered elections for decades.
Franklin Roosevelt won West Virginia four times.
Robert Byrd held his Senate seat for over fifty years.
Then Al Gore showed up in 2000 with the Kyoto Protocol and a plan to cap coal emissions.
Rank-and-file miners didn't wait for union leadership to catch up – they broke with decades of habit and voted for George W. Bush.
When Obama followed with his promise that anyone who built a coal plant would go bankrupt, the break became permanent.
When Hillary Clinton stood in front of a crowd and told them she was going to "put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business," the last emotional thread snapped.
Republicans Took the Legislature for the First Time in 83 Years
That is not a typo.
West Virginia Democrats controlled the state legislature from 1933 until Republicans took it back in 2014 – eighty-three years without interruption.
They have never let go since.
By 2016, Trump won the state by 42 points.
He carried every single West Virginia county in both 2020 and 2024.
Between December 2016 and October 2024, Democratic Party enrollment in West Virginia fell by more than 37 percent.
That is not a trend.
That is a party dissolving in real time.
The Republican registration total now stands at 519,756 – and it gains between 700 and 1,500 new registrants every single month.
Why No Democrat Can Win It Back
Pushkin's spin is that voters are frustrated with "politics as usual."
That's not what happened.
West Virginians watched their party spend twenty years telling them their jobs were the enemy of the planet.
They watched Obama's EPA shut down mines, watched coal companies declare bankruptcy, watched fathers take $60,000 pay cuts and wonder if they could still send their kids to college.
They watched Biden shut down pipelines on his first day in office and energy prices spike while Washington told them to buy electric cars.
The West Virginia Democratic Party that won elections ran on protecting unions, backing coal, and keeping American energy alive.
That party ceased to exist.
The people registering Republican right now aren't confused about which party abandoned which.
They know exactly what happened.
So does Mike Pushkin.
He just can't say it.
