A leftist murdered Charlie Kirk in broad daylight – and nine months later, the Vance family is having a fourth child because of it.
Now, the Second Lady is telling the story of how it happened.
It traces back to one moment at a Utah university where a widow told a Second Lady – through sobs – what she regretted most.
What Erika Said That Changed the Vances
Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10, 2025, shot by a rooftop sniper while speaking to 3,000 students at Utah Valley University.
JD Vance was with Erika that same day.

In his new book Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, Vance describes what happened when Erika spoke to Usha – she said she regretted having only two children with Charlie.
That single moment reshuffled something inside both of them.
"I think it really heightened JD's sense that he'd been talking about this for a while," Usha said Sunday on CBS News Sunday Morning. "This sense that there was this possibility of having another kid whom he could love as much as the three that we had."
She continued: "It really did crystallize for him, that sense that if you could have that other child, then you would have nothing to regret."
A Death That Sparked a Decision About Life
Usha was careful to be precise – Erika's grief wasn't the final push.
"I think I had already started to open my mind to the possibility," she said. "I wouldn't say this was for me in any way the decisive factor, but it came in the middle of a conversation that we were already having."
It came in the middle.
That's more powerful than if it had been the trigger.
It means Kirk's death didn't create a decision – it clarified one that was already forming.
The Vances announced the pregnancy in January.
Their three children – Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel – will have a brother this July.
Why This Story Matters Beyond the Vances
Communion releases Tuesday.
In it, Vance traces his road from the Christianity of his youth to atheism to his 2019 Catholic conversion at St. Gertrude Priory in Cincinnati.
He's described it publicly as a "long and winding road" to find a God he felt he had lost as a young man.
The book arrives as the Catholic Church is experiencing a quiet resurgence in America – particularly among younger conservatives who've rejected the secularism that dominated their generation.
But the Charlie Kirk chapter cuts through all of that.
Because it's not theology.
It's a widow's words through tears.

Erika Kirk has since become CEO of Turning Point USA.
She told Fox News she doesn't question God's plan.
"God, use me. God, heal my heart. You know my pain, you know the depths of my pain," she said. "I don't want anything outside of God's will."
Think about what that actually means.
A 22-year-old leftist climbed onto a rooftop in Utah and murdered a 31-year-old conservative father of two.
And the direct consequence – nine months later – is a baby boy on the way at the Vice President's residence.
They thought they were killing a movement.
They were planting one.
