Then 2025 saw that many cases in just the first few months.
In January, kidnappers grabbed Ledger co-founder David Balland from his French home and cut off his finger demanding €10 million in crypto.
A Chicago family lost $15 million in Bitcoin last October after kidnappers held them for five days.
Canadian crypto CEO Dean Skurka paid $720,000 to get free in November.
These aren't random street crimes – they're calculated attacks on families who have nothing to do with cryptocurrency, targeting elderly parents because criminals know their kids will pay anything.

Sheriff's deputies went back to Nancy's Tucson home Wednesday afternoon with cadaver dogs and crime scene tape.
They're not saying why they returned four days later, but it's never a good sign when K-9 units show up.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department is coordinating with the FBI, processing every tip that comes in.
Sheriff Nanos won't confirm whether the ransom notes are legitimate, but he's not dismissing them either.
