Trump Found One Way to Use Democrats’ Shutdown That Will Permanently Shrink Government

Oct 2, 2025

The federal government has become a bloated monster that devours taxpayer dollars while delivering lousy service.

For decades, conservatives have talked about trimming the fat, but somehow the bureaucracy just keeps growing like a cancer.

And now Trump found one way to use Democrats’ shutdown that will permanently shrink government.

Democrats Shut Down Government to Protect Wasteful Spending

The federal government officially shut down early Wednesday morning after Senate Democrats refused to pass a funding package.

Republicans had crafted a reasonable continuing resolution to keep the lights on, but Democrats balked at one key provision.

The GOP bill excluded enhanced Obamacare subsidies that were supposed to be temporary COVID-era measures but somehow became permanent under Joe Biden.

These subsidies are set to expire at the end of 2025 unless Congress acts.

But Republicans discovered that extending these subsidies would effectively provide taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits to illegal immigrants.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer tried to deny this inconvenient truth, claiming "That is absolutely false. That is one of the big lies that they tell."

But the numbers don’t lie, and Democrats knew exactly what they were protecting when they forced this shutdown.

Trump Turns Democrat Obstruction Into Strategic Opportunity

While Democrats thought they were playing hardball, Trump was already three moves ahead.

The President publicly stated he didn’t want a government shutdown – but then laid out exactly how he planned to use one if Democrats forced his hand.

"Now, with that being said, we can do things during the shutdown that are irreversible, that are bad for them and irreversible by them, like cutting vast numbers of people out, cutting things that they like, cutting programs that they like," Trump explained from the Oval Office Tuesday.

This wasn’t a threat – it was a promise.

Under the Antideficiency Act, federal agencies cannot spend funds during a shutdown except for constitutional duties and essential services.

But here’s the brilliant part: the executive branch gets to decide what counts as "essential."

Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought suddenly became the most powerful man in Washington, D.C. with discretion to determine which programs continue and which get the axe.

"Russell Vought became very popular recently because he can trim the budget to a level that you couldn’t do any other way," Trump continued. "So they’re taking a risk by having a shutdown because, because of the shutdown, we can do things medically and other ways, including benefits. We can cut large numbers of people."

Trump Delivers on Promise to Drain the Swamp

This isn’t just political rhetoric – Trump is delivering on his core campaign promise to drain the swamp.

Vice President JD Vance confirmed Wednesday that layoffs are coming during the shutdown, though he predicted it wouldn’t last long.

"We’re going to have to make things work," Vance explained during a White House press briefing. "And that means that we’re going to have to triage some certain things, that means certain people are going to have to get laid off."

Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, has already identified billions in wasteful spending and fraud across federal agencies.

DOGE investigators have uncovered outrageous examples of government waste, including $25 million to promote "biodiversity conservation" in Colombia and $42 million for "social and behavior change" in Uganda.

Now Trump has the legal authority to act on those findings immediately.

Here’s What Democrats Really Did to Themselves

Democrats thought they were being clever by forcing a shutdown over healthcare subsidies for illegal aliens.

Instead, they handed Trump the perfect tool to accomplish what Republicans have wanted for decades – actually shrinking the federal government.

Under normal circumstances, cutting federal programs requires months of congressional negotiations and compromise.

But during a shutdown? Trump can make "irreversible" cuts with the stroke of a pen.

The White House has already moved to pause or cancel billions in infrastructure projects in blue states, including $18 billion in New York alone.

These aren’t temporary measures that can be easily restored – they’re strategic cuts designed to permanently reduce government spending.

For folks who’ve watched the federal government grow out of control for years, this is exactly what they voted for.

Trump campaigned on draining the swamp and cutting wasteful spending.

Now Democrats have given him the perfect opportunity to deliver on both promises simultaneously.

And the best part? They can’t blame Republicans for the shutdown when they’re the ones who refused to fund the government over benefits for illegal aliens.

The American people will remember who chose illegal aliens over American taxpayers when the dust settles on this political miscalculation.
