Tom Selleck Told CBS Exactly Where To Stick Their Boston Blue Plans

Dec 2, 2025

Tom Selleck became a household name over 14 seasons as NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods.

The show dominated Friday nights and earned millions of loyal fans.

And Tom Selleck just told CBS exactly where to stick their Boston Blue plans.

CBS canceled a ratings juggernaut then expected Selleck to save the spinoff

CBS pulled the plug on Blue Bloods after 14 seasons despite massive ratings success.

The network canceled one of its best-performing shows while it still pulled in huge viewership numbers.

Blue Bloods ranked sixth among all broadcast shows when you exclude football programming.¹

Selleck called the cancellation a "huge disappointment" and admitted he still doesn't understand CBS's decision.²

"My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go," Selleck told TV Insider.³

The 80-year-old actor built Frank Reagan into one of television's most iconic characters over nearly 300 episodes.

CBS executives canceled the show Selleck created, then turned around expecting him to show up for the spinoff Boston Blue.

That's not how this works.

Selleck shut down CBS's spinoff dreams with one blunt statement

Boston Blue premiered in October 2025 with Donnie Wahlberg reprising his role as Danny Reagan.

The spinoff follows Danny after he transfers from the NYPD to the Boston Police Department.

Bridget Moynahan and Marisa Ramirez already made cameo appearances.

CBS banked on Selleck eventually showing up as Frank Reagan to boost ratings.

When Hour Detroit asked Selleck about appearing on Boston Blue, he shut it down cold.

"I don't know if I would do Boston Blue — that's another show," Selleck stated.⁴

Then Selleck ended the conversation permanently.

"I think it's partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don't think it's my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan," Selleck explained.⁵

CBS made their choice when they canceled Blue Bloods.

Selleck has moved on.

Wahlberg told Parade he spoke to Selleck before committing to Boston Blue and that his former co-star has been "very supportive."⁶

But supportive doesn't mean showing up.

Selleck made clear he's finished with Frank Reagan and the Reagan family dinners that defined Blue Bloods.

The network destroyed a hit show then wondered why Selleck walked away

Selleck has every reason to be done with CBS and the franchise they destroyed.

Blue Bloods consistently won Friday nights in television's toughest time slot.

The final season averaged over 5 million viewers in live viewing alone.⁷

The series finale pulled 6.68 million viewers — a season high.⁸

CBS canceled the show anyway because long-running series cost more to produce than newer shows with cheaper contracts.

The cast even took a 25% pay cut in 2023 trying to save the show.⁹

None of it mattered.

CBS chose saving money over keeping their most reliable Friday night performer on the air.

Now they're scrambling to build a spinoff without the patriarch who made the original show work.

Selleck told Parade he's pursuing Westerns and comedies instead of chasing Frank Reagan's ghost.¹⁰

"A good Western's always on my list. I miss that. I want to sit on a horse again," Selleck said. "I would love to do another comedy. The right kind of comedy. Friends made people laugh and cry at times. That's the kind of comedy I enjoy doing."¹¹

He's working on another installment of the Jesse Stone franchise.¹²

Selleck expressed interest in working with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan on a Western project.¹³

The man's 80 years old and has a full career ahead without Boston Blue.

CBS bet they could replace Selleck's gravitas with Ernie Hudson playing a Baptist minister patriarch in Boston.

Good luck with that.

Selleck built Blue Bloods into must-watch television for 14 years.

CBS rewarded his loyalty by canceling the show.

Now they want him to come save their spinoff.

Selleck just gave them his answer.
