Tom Selleck has been a fixture in the entertainment industry for decades.
But Selleck recently gave the public a peek behind the curtain.
And Tom Selleck made a career admission that left fans stunned.
Tom Selleck surprises everyone by revealing he isn’t as well off as people think
Tom Selleck hit it big on the CBS show Magnum P.I., which ran for eight seasons from 1980 to 1988.
Selleck played Thomas Magnum IV, a private detective who lived a life of luxury on a private estate in Hawaii, drove a Ferrari, and solved cases in his spare time.
In 1987, Selleck starred in the hit movie Three Men and a Baby where he played architect Peter Mitchell, the film’s central character.
The film grossed $240 against a $15 million budget, making it one of the biggest financial hits of the year.
Selleck also struck a chord with audiences in a recurring role as Dr. Richard Burke, the boyfriend of Courtney Cox’s character Monica Gellar, on the smash-hit show Friends.
More recently, Selleck starred for the last 14 seasons as New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan on the CBS hit Blue Bloods.
But despite the decades of success in Hollywood, Selleck revealed in a CBS interview that he needs to keep working to keep his home.
“You know, hopefully, I keep working enough to hold onto the place,” Selleck told the CBS interviewer.
“Seriously, that’s an issue? If you stopped working?” the shocked reporter responded.
Reporters – like fans – think actors all live the lifestyle of the rich and the famous and don’t have financial concerns.
But Selleck made it clear that isn’t the case.
“That’s always an issue,” Selleck answered.
The 79-year-old Selleck explained that he has enough money to live the rest of his life in comfort, but to afford a 63-acre ranch in California he needs to keep working.
“If I stopped working, yeah,” Selleck explained. “Am I set for life? Yeah, but maybe not on a 63-acre ranch!”
Selleck’s career philosophy
CBS asked what Selleck sees in his future.
Selleck told CBS that he just doesn’t keep working for money.
Acting is his craft and his love.
And he hopes to continue finding projects that scratch that itch.
“Hopefully, work. As an actor, you never lose – I don’t lose, anyway – that sense that every time I finish a job, it’s my last job,” Selleck added.
“You just go to work and you do the work. And I have a lot of reverence for what I call ‘the work,’ and I love it. And I’d like to keep doing it,” Selleck continued.
Selleck will need a new film or show to work on after CBS announced the 14th season of Blue Bloods would be the show’s last.
The first 10 episodes premiered in February.
And the final eight episodes of Blue Bloods will begin airing in October of 2024.
