Tom Brady admits jokes about his divorce hurt his kids
On a recent episode of The Pivot podcast with co-hosts Fred Taylor, Ryan Clark, and Channing Crowder, former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady discussed the Netflix roast of him that became a viral pop culture sensation.
Brady’s divorce from Gisele was one of the prime targets for the comedians and former teammates to get their digs in at Brady.
In the interview, Brady admitted he didn’t find the jokes about his marriage so funny when he saw how they affected his three kids.
“I loved when the jokes were about me. I thought they were so fun,” Brady stated.
“I didn’t like the way they affected my kid,” Brady added.
Brady also told the co-hosts that he wouldn’t have agreed to do the roast if he knew so many of the barbs would be targeted at the mother of his children.
“It was the bittersweet aspect of when you’re doing something you think is one way and then you realize I wouldn’t do that again because of the way it affected the people I care about the most in the world,” Brady continued.
But Brady said the one positive he took from the experience was it helped him become a better parent.
“It makes you in some ways a better parent going through it because sometimes you’re naïve,” Brady concluded.
Comedians roasted Brady over his divorce
Gisele and Brady divorced in October 2022 after being married for 13 years.
A source close to Gisele told People that Gisele “was deeply disappointed by the disrespectful portrayal of her family on Sunday evening’s roast show.”
“As always, [Bündchen’s] priority is to support her children who were affected by the irresponsible content that was broadcasted,” the source added.
Roasters took aim at Gisele’s relationship with her Brazilian jiu-jitsu trainer, Joaquim Valente, in often profane and graphic terms.
“How much would it suck for Tom . . . omg, just knowing your ex-wife’s new boyfriend could beat your a** while eating hers,” comedian Nikki Glasser quipped.
Former teammate Drew Bledsoe, the Patriots star quarterback that Brady displaced in 2001, also got a shot in at Brady’s reputation for the National Football League protecting him from hits and the divorce.
“Obviously buddy, you got really used to not being touched,” Bledsoe said of Brady’s career.
“Just like the end of the marriage,” Bledsoe added.
A stunned Brady took sips from two different drinks as the crowd gasped in shock.
Roast MC Kevin Hart kicked off the roast with a graphic sex joke about Gisele.
“You sometimes got to f*** your coach,” Hart roared. “You know who else f***ed their coach? Gisele. She f***ed that karate man.”
Many of these jokes didn’t land because the target was Gisele and the intent was to humiliate Brady as opposed to having a laugh at his expense.
