Trump posted an AI image of himself as Jesus Christ and the media ran with it for six days.
Now the Pope says the whole narrative "has not been accurate in all its aspects" – and JD Vance just publicly thanked him for it.
The press wanted a war between the White House and the Vatican, but they didn't get one.
What the Media Was Selling You
The story the mainstream press constructed went like this: Trump called the first American pope weak and terrible on foreign policy.
Pope Leo fired back that he had "no fear of the Trump administration." An unprecedented holy war between a US president and a US pope – and it was all Trump's fault.

CNN, Reuters, and NPR worked that narrative hard.
What they buried: Pope Leo's Cameroon speech – the one they framed as a direct shot at Trump – was written two weeks before Trump ever criticized him.
The Pope said so himself, on his flight to Angola on April 18.
"That talk I gave at the prayer meeting for peace was prepared two weeks ago, well before the president ever commented on myself," Leo told reporters. "Much of what has been written since then has been commentary on commentary trying to interpret what has been said."
He added that it was "not in my interest at all" to debate the president.
What Vance Said That the Press Won't Tell You
JD Vance posted on X hours after the Pope's plane-side remarks and said something the press has no interest in explaining to you.
"I am grateful to Pope Leo for saying this," Vance wrote. "While the media narrative constantly gins up conflict – and yes, real disagreements have happened and will happen – the reality is often much more complicated."
He didn't pretend there's zero tension between a pope preaching universal peace and a president stopping Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.
He said something more honest than that.
"Pope Leo preaches the gospel, as he should, and that will inevitably mean he offers his opinions on the moral issues of the day. The President – and the entire administration – work to apply those moral principles in a messy world."
That's the framework the media can't sell advertising against.
A pope saying "blessed are the peacemakers" and a president preventing a nuclear-armed Iran from incinerating Tel Aviv are not in contradiction – they're operating at different levels of the same moral order.
Vance closed his post with a line the press skipped entirely: "He will be in our prayers, and I hope that we'll be in his."
The Real Story They Didn't Want You to See
Here's what was actually happening in Cameroon while American media ran Vatican-vs-MAGA wall-to-wall.
Pope Leo was meeting with Paul Biya – the 93-year-old strongman who has ruled Cameroon since 1982 and just secured a controversial eighth term amid widespread irregularities.
He was speaking to Christians living under actual authoritarian governments, in a country where a prominent local Jesuit priest publicly asked the Pope not to come because of the political risk.

His speech about tyrants and war wasn't prepared for cable news consumption in America.
It was prepared for a cathedral in Bamenda, Cameroon – and the American press ripped it out of context, slapped Trump's name on it, and ran the clip for six days.
Vance understands this.
The media's entire play for the past week was manufacturing a split between Trump and the Catholic voters who delivered him two consecutive election victories.
It didn't work.
The Pope said the coverage was inaccurate.
Vance thanked him.
And somewhere in a CNN control room, a producer just deleted a week's worth of chyrons.
