In 1963, America's bald eagle was down to just 417 nesting pairs.
This week, Donald Trump put a golden bald eagle on the Truman Balcony of the White House to mark America's 250th birthday.
And what he chose and why the media immediately attacked it instead of celebrating it tells you everything you need to know.
The Bird That Almost Disappeared From American Skies
The bald eagle has been America's national symbol since 1782.
The Continental Congress chose it for its fierce independence and commanding presence – the kind of bird that doesn't apologize and doesn't flinch.
Benjamin Franklin famously hated the choice, calling it "a bird of bad moral character."
America ignored him and put the eagle on the Great Seal anyway – arrows in one talon, an olive branch in the other, the motto E Pluribus Unum above its head.
Then came the 20th century and the pesticide DDT, which poisoned the food chain, thinned eagle eggshells, and killed embryos before they could hatch.
By 1963, there were just 417 known nesting pairs left in the lower 48 states – a number so small the entire species could have vanished inside a single generation.
America refused to let it happen.

The government listed the bald eagle as endangered in 1967, banned DDT in 1972, launched captive breeding programs, and released eagles back into the wild across 15 states.
It worked.
Today, more than 71,000 nesting pairs of bald eagles soar over the lower 48 states – the greatest wildlife comeback story this country has ever produced.
Congress made it official in 2024, formally designating the bald eagle as America's national bird after more than two centuries as the country's unofficial national symbol.
So when Donald Trump posted an image of a massive golden bald eagle adorning the Truman Balcony Monday evening with the caption "A Golden Gift to the White House for its 250th Birthday Year!" – the media went straight to work attacking it.
People magazine called the image AI-generated.
A freelance photographer posted photos of the empty balcony at 9:30 p.m. that same night.
The White House has not confirmed whether the image represents a planned real installation or a patriotic rendering.
Here is what they all missed.
Trump Has Been Rebuilding the People's House Since Day One
Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has made the People's House look like the People's House again.
Gold-framed paintings and ornamentation fill the Oval Office walls.
Large custom medallions mark the West Wing and the residence.
Black marble lines the West Wing colonnade alongside a presidential walk of fame.
Two massive American flags fly from new poles on the North and South Lawns.
The ballroom project – with $350 million raised from private donors – is under active construction where the old East Wing stood, with a military complex being built beneath it.
And now, as America prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence this Saturday, Trump is telling the country exactly what kind of celebration this is going to be.
The Freedom 250 festivities on the National Mall include what Trump has called "the most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all" at the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument.
The fireworks show – billed as the largest in American history – runs 40 minutes starting at 10:30 p.m., double the traditional length.
The Great American State Fair has run all week with exhibits from all 50 states and U.S. territories.

The U.S. Navy is hosting an International Fleet Review in New York Harbor with 60 ships from 30 countries.
And a golden bald eagle sits at the center of the most patriotic moment this country has seen in a generation.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service put it plainly in their own tribute to America's 250th: "The bald eagle's comeback is a distinctly American tale of resilience. It's a reminder that our values of freedom, strength, and determination, are part of the fabric of this great nation."
The Image They Can't Fact-Check Away
The mainstream media can fact-check Trump's eagle photo all they want.
They can call it AI-generated.
They can run their pieces about metadata and Google image credentials.
What they cannot explain is why a bird that was down to 417 nesting pairs sixty years ago now fills 71,000 American nests – and what that says about who we are.
They can't explain why a symbol of freedom, resilience, and national identity hits every American the same way it did in 1782 when the founders put it on the Great Seal.
And they definitely can't explain why this president – the one they've spent a decade trying to destroy – is the one standing at the Lincoln Memorial this Saturday while they write hit pieces about eagle photos.
The bald eagle came back because Americans refused to let it go.
It survived because this country, when it decides something matters, does not quit.
Donald Trump just put one in gold on the White House for America's 250th birthday.
That's not AI-generated.
That's America.
