And when reporters inevitably tried to bait her into discussing the manufactured outrage, Sweeney shut them down cold.
"I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it," she told Vanity Fair before the festival. "I’m not there to talk about jeans."²
That’s it. No apology tour. No groveling explanation. Just a professional woman doing her job and refusing to get dragged into the Left’s culture war circus.
The movie itself tells the story of legendary boxer Christy Martin, and Sweeney transformed her body completely for the role – gaining over 30 pounds through intense training and a diet that included "a lot of Chick-fil-A" and protein shakes.³
"I trained three times a day, every day," Sweeney explained during the Q&A after the film’s premiere. "But it was incredible being able to completely embody such a powerful woman. I felt even stronger."⁴
The real Christy Martin praised Sweeney’s courage
Here’s what makes this even better – the real Christy Martin, who survived an assassination attempt by her abusive husband, was there to support Sweeney.
"Christy the boxer was just the persona, very bombastic and very egotistical, but that is not who I am," Martin explained to the crowd. "I am actually very shy and reserved."⁵
"I have these two different parts of my personality, which I think is why Sydney Sweeney does this awesome job," she continued. "She got to be this totally different person that none of you expected. She wasn’t the beautiful, sexy Sydney. She was the tough, rugged Christy in this movie."⁶
The film received a standing ovation, and critics are already talking about Oscar buzz for Sweeney’s performance.⁷
