Scott Bessent Stopped Ron Wyden Cold When He Asked About His Son and Jeffrey Epstein

Jun 7, 2026

Ron Wyden spent months accusing the Trump administration of burying Epstein evidence.

Wednesday, that accusation landed on a Senate hearing table – and came flying back in his face.

Scott Bessent asked one question about Wyden's son that the senator had no answer for.

The Moment Wyden Walked Into His Own Trap

Wyden came in swinging.

The Oregon Democrat opened his remarks at a Senate Finance Committee budget hearing by calling the Trump administration "the most corrupt regime in American history."

He accused Bessent specifically of blocking his committee's access to Epstein's financial records.

He invoked Epstein by name – his supposed area of investigative expertise – as his sharpest weapon.

Bessent let him finish.

Then the Treasury Secretary looked up from his prepared remarks and calmly dismantled everything.

"Senator Wyden has mendaciously slandered the Treasury building in an attempt to cover up his son having an investment meeting with Jeffrey Epstein to ask for funding," Bessent said.

Wyden fired back, calling Bessent "a capo in the most corrupt regime in American history."

Bessent didn't flinch.

"We would like to hear what Adam Wyden and Jeffrey Epstein talked about," he said. Then: "Your son's largest investment position was Rick's Cabaret."

Wyden – the senator who built his brand on Epstein accountability – went silent.

What the DOJ Files Actually Show

The emails that ended Wyden's attack didn't come from opposition research.

They came from the DOJ's own Epstein files – the same documents Wyden has been demanding the Trump administration release.

Those files showed that in late April 2016, Adam Wyden – Ron Wyden's son and founder of hedge fund ADW Capital – traveled to Epstein's Manhattan mansion to pitch the convicted sex offender on investing in his fund.

Epstein had already pleaded guilty to soliciting a minor for prostitution in Florida in 2008.

Adam Wyden knew this.

He went anyway.

Scheduling documents logged the meeting at 10:00 a.m. on April 28, 2016, at the same Manhattan property where Epstein carried out much of his criminal activity.

Afterward, Adam Wyden sent Epstein a warm follow-up email.

"Jeffrey, I wanted to thank you for taking the time to meet with me," he wrote. "I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and hope my passion and dedication for my business came through in the meeting."

He described Epstein as a "like-minded individual" and said he "would very much look forward to having you join us at the fund."

The introduction came through mutual friend Jonathan Farkas – the brother of a man The New York Times described as having a "profound friendship" and extensive business ties with Epstein.

When the emails first surfaced in March, Ron Wyden's response was that he doesn't discuss his children's business activities and learned about it on social media like everyone else.

He never explained the substance of what his son discussed with a convicted child sex offender inside Epstein's Manhattan mansion.

The Trail Leads Back to Democrats

Democrats spent the last year weaponizing Epstein as a political cudgel – running midterm ads, demanding transparency, and positioning themselves as champions for survivors.

Wyden built his entire brand on it.

His "follow the money" investigation launched in 2022 and expanded aggressively through 2025 and into 2026.

Every trail he followed pointed somewhere other than Trump.

Three witnesses deposed under oath – including Bill Clinton – testified that Trump did nothing wrong.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer noted the pattern directly: Democrats demanded full transparency, then complained that releasing all 23,000 pages of Epstein documents was designed to "disorient" their narrative.

The same DOJ transparency Wyden championed exposed his son's 2016 trip to Epstein's mansion and the emails where Adam called a convicted child predator a "like-minded individual."

Bessent didn't need a dirty trick to win that exchange on Wednesday.

He used Wyden's own evidence.
