Schumer Killed Voter ID Then Fled to Munich Rather Than Defend It on the Senate Floor

Feb 25, 2026

Chuck Schumer just pulled off one of the most brazen acts of political cowardice in recent Senate history.

He killed DHS funding – leaving TSA workers, Coast Guard personnel, and FEMA disaster responders working without pay – and then boarded a flight to Germany before anyone could make him answer for it.

Now Sen. Mike Lee has a message for Schumer and every Democrat who wants to block the SAVE America Act: if you want to kill this bill, you're going to have to stand on the Senate floor and say so out loud, for as long as it takes.

Democrats Blocked the SAVE Act Then Left the Country

The SAVE America Act passed the House 218-213 and heads to a Senate where Lee has secured more than 50 Republican co-sponsors – enough to pass with a simple majority if Democrats are forced to filibuster the old-fashioned way.

The "zombie filibuster" – Lee's term for the modern Senate rule that lets Democrats block legislation without leaving their offices – is standing in the way.

So Lee went on Fox News Sunday to make his demand clear.

"A filibuster in this circumstance should require them to go to the Senate floor, seek recognition, and start speaking until they are no longer able," Lee told Maria Bartiromo. "That's how we ought to get this thing passed."

The bill itself is straightforward: prove you're a citizen when you register to vote, show a photo ID at the polls. Eighty-three percent of Americans support it according to Pew Research – including 71% of Democratic voters.

Schumer's response? "It's Jim Crow 2.0."

Then he got on a plane.

The Talking Filibuster Democrats Cannot Filibuster From Germany

Here's what Democrats don't want to talk about: they've tried this before and lost.

In January 2022, Senate Democrats attempted to carve out a filibuster exception to pass their own voting overhaul – automatic registration, expanded mail voting. They needed their own members to hold the line, and Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema said no. The effort collapsed on the Senate floor.

Now Republicans want to flip the script. Instead of eliminating the filibuster, they're proposing to restore it to its original form – the one where you actually have to stand up and speak. Before Senate rule changes in the 1970s created the silent version, filibustering meant exactly what the word implies: you hold the floor, or you lose it.

The last senator to hold that floor was New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker, who spoke for 25 hours in April 2025 protesting Trump administration policies. That's the standard Democrats set. Lee is asking them to meet it on voter ID.

Mike Lee Has the Votes and Schumer Knows It

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has expressed skepticism about the talking filibuster strategy – it eats up floor time and stalls other priorities. But he co-sponsored the SAVE America Act and has been forcing Democrats to publicly explain why 83% of Americans are wrong about election integrity.

The DHS shutdown is the complication that Lee acknowledged directly on Sunday. Democrats shut down Homeland Security – TSA, FEMA, Coast Guard, cybersecurity – to protest ICE enforcement operations. They demanded judicial warrants for arrests, an end to agents wearing masks, body cameras, and elimination of what they called "roving patrols." Republicans refused.

While Schumer was on CNN from Munich calling ICE a "rogue force," TSA workers were showing up without pay.

Now that Congress is back, the SAVE America Act is next – and Lee is pushing before the midterm primary calendar closes the window.

"We need to vote as soon as possible," Lee said, "because the American people demand elections that are secure."

Schumer has vowed to fight it "tooth and nail." Lee's invitation: do it standing up.
