Ron DeSantis touts Florida’s success at cracking down on illegal immigration
Blue states are recoiling at the chaos created by the border crisis that President Joe Biden unleashed on the country after taking office.
The sanctuary state of Massachusetts became the latest blue state to take dramatic action to try to slow down the flow of illegal aliens into its cities.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey sent state officials to Texas to “educate” illegal aliens about the lack of room in the state’s shelters for them.
The deep blue state is far from the border, but it’s been overwhelmed by the Biden border crisis.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis told Fox News host Sean Hannity that his state’s crackdown on illegal immigration had deterred them from coming.
DeSantis said that sanctuary cities were already banned in Florida, but he began to take more aggressive action once Biden was elected.
“We knew we’d get no support from the federal government,” DeSantis explained. “So we’ve had to do all these different things at the state level to be able to deter illegal immigration into our state.”
He pointed to the laundry list of actions that he’s signed into law, including an E-Verify system for employers, prohibiting driver’s licenses given to illegal aliens in other states from being accepted in Florida, and sending the National Guard to Texas to help secure the border.
“So we’ve been able to do a lot on that to deter people from wanting to come,” DeSantis said.
Taxpayer money spent on illegal alien healthcare drops after DeSantis law
Florida has had a massive decline in spending on illegal aliens’ healthcare through Medicaid after DeSantis required that hospitals ask about the immigration status of the patients they treat.
“We made sure when you have people show up at the hospital that we’re asking about immigration status, and that’s caused the Medicaid expenditures to plummet by 50%,” DeSantis stated.
Florida’s Emergency Medical Assistance program spent $148.4 million on emergency healthcare for illegal aliens in the fiscal year before the law was passed.
This fiscal year – with two months left to go – the state has spent $67 million.
Illegal aliens are prevented from receiving Medicaid – a federal healthcare program – but federal law requires that it pick up the tab for emergencies like pregnancy or serious trauma.
The Mexican Consulate in Orlando complained that its citizens weren’t going to the hospital as often after the law took effect.
Florida Agency for Health Care Administration spokeswoman Alecia Collins said that the drop in the spending revealed the cost of illegal immigration.
“By shedding light on the true cost burden of illegal immigration we hope to bring awareness to the citizens of Florida and the United States as a whole,” Collins stated. “The current state of inaction in Washington D.C. is unacceptable, and this crisis must be addressed.”
