Prince Harry destroyed his life trying to deal with one painful reality

Apr 9, 2025

Prince Harry’s life hasn’t turned out like he planned.

He’s been haunted by his past for years.

And Prince Harry destroyed his life trying to deal with one painful reality.

Prince Harry is haunted by being a spare

Prince Harry is driving himself mad over being a spare.

The second-born child to King Charles III and the late Princess Diana is the “spare,” while his older brother, Prince William, is their heir to the British throne.

Harry’s 2023 tell-all memoir was titled Spare – a nod to the old phrase “heir and a spare.”

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams claimed that Harry’s role as the spare has bothered him his entire life.

“Harry is obviously obsessed with being ‘the spare,’” Fitzwilliams said. “Harry believes ‘the institution,’ as he calls the monarchy, had it in for him and Meghan Markle. The palace, he believes, briefed against him. His accusation that Queen Camilla was particularly ruthless in this regard was a red line for King Charles.”

In Spare, Harry accused Camilla of leaking secrets about him and Meghan Markle to the press in exchange for favorable coverage.

Majesty magazine editor-in-chief Ingrid Seward argued that Harry has turned being the spare into a career.

“He chooses to be the victim and wreak vengeance on the slights he thought he had suffered; on his family, on the press and through the courts,” Seward told the Daily Mail. “[It’s] how Harry chose to see himself.”

Harry is his own worst enemy

Author Tom Quinn interviewed more than 100 current and former palace staffers for his book Yes Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants.

Palace staffers told Harry that he had a good life because he didn’t have the worries and responsibility of being the future King of England like William.

Quinn said that Harry never bought this line of argument.

William and Kate Middleton being prepped to become the future King and Queen only made Harry more miserable.

“The British royal system can be very cruel, and it’s particularly cruel to the spare,” royal author Robert Lacey stated. “Harry came to realize… that he was typecast as the court jester, the No. 2.”

Author Christopher Andersen claimed that William always received more attention from his family than Harry as the heir to the throne.

“Harry was always in the shadow of his big brother, and it had a profound effect on his self-confidence — or lack thereof,” Andersen said. “Within the royal family, the focus was always on William. Outside the royal family, the focus was always on William. If there was a social situation, or a ceremonial situation, or even a family get-together, Harry was shunted aside, and in many cases completely ignored… When these things happen to you beginning in infancy, obviously you’re going to build up some resentment.”

Harry and Meghan quit their roles as senior members of the royal family and fled the United Kingdom for Southern California in 2020.

“Sadly, Prince Harry has gone from being the spare to the popular and globally significant heir to now spare to his unpopular wife,” royal expert Hilary Fordwich stated. “Instead of embracing the role the royal family envisioned for him… he has chosen to view himself as a victim.”

Harry has made himself miserable by embracing his status as the victim and focusing on the negatives in his life.
