Chuck Schumer called it an assault on democracy.
Pew Research just called it a 10% reduction in the federal workforce – the largest peacetime government downsizing in American history.
Trump didn't just trim the bureaucracy – he demolished it, and the numbers are now on paper for every Democrat who said it couldn't be done.
The Agencies That Deserved It Most Took the Hardest Hits
Pew's analysis of newly released government data found the federal workforce dropped by 238,000 employees in 2025 – a net reduction of 10.3%.
More than 348,000 federal employees quit, retired, were laid off, or walked out the door, an 80.8% surge over 2024 departures.
New hiring collapsed 55.6% in the same period.
The Department of Education lost 42.6% of its workforce, shrinking from roughly 4,300 employees to fewer than 2,500.
USAID – the agency Biden used to funnel billions overseas while Americans struggled at home – shed more than 92% of its staff, dropping from nearly 4,900 workers to just 370.
The agency overseeing the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities lost 56.6% of its people.

AmeriCorps dropped 43.6%. The Small Business Administration shrank 32.9%.
White-collar administrative positions took the sharpest cuts, down 10.6% – the budget analysts and bureaucrats who spent four years under Biden expanding their own power took the biggest hits of all.
While Washington Bloat Collapsed, the Border Got Reinforced
Here is what the media will not tell you about these numbers.
While Trump was cutting the agencies that lecture Americans and shuffle paper, he was simultaneously building the agencies that protect them.
ICE more than doubled its workforce – from 10,000 officers to 22,000 – after Congress passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and funded the largest law enforcement hiring surge in the agency's history.
DHS confirmed more than 220,000 Americans applied to join ICE.
Customs and Border Protection also grew, with Border Patrol Agent new hires up 84% over the prior year.
AOC called it "cruelty." Nancy Pelosi called it "chaos." Bernie Sanders said workers were being "thrown to the wolves."
The wolves turned out to be 238,000 fewer federal employees and a national unemployment rate that moved from 4.1% to 4.4% over the course of the entire year.
The private sector absorbed the transition without a crisis.
This Is the Promise He Actually Kept
Clinton spent six years cutting 377,000 federal jobs. Trump cut 238,000 in one.
The Cato Institute called it the largest peacetime workforce reduction on record – a pace not seen outside of post-war military demobilizations.
Federal employment fell back to levels last seen in 2014, erasing a decade of bureaucratic bloat in twelve months.

Democrats spent every one of those months in court. They sued.
They got judges to issue temporary blocks. They staged press conferences and called it an attack on working Americans.
What they couldn't do was stop it.
Every parent who watched the Department of Education balloon under Biden while test scores cratered now has the data to prove what they suspected: that agency existed to protect itself, not educate children.
It just lost 42% of its staff and the schools are still open.
Trump ran on shrinking Washington.
Washington fought back with everything it had. And Pew just published the final score.
