Pete Hegseth made one bold move with military AI that has China scrambling

China's been racing to dominate the military AI battlefield for years.

Beijing's pouring billions into weapons systems designed to crush American forces in any future conflict.

And Pete Hegseth made one bold move with military AI that has China scrambling.

War Secretary launches GenAI revolution across Pentagon

War Secretary Pete Hegseth just rolled out GenAI.mil to every single member of America's military forces.

Over three million troops, civilians, and contractors now have direct access to Google's Gemini artificial intelligence on their work computers.

"The future of American warfare is here, and it's spelled A-I," Hegseth declared in a video message announcing the platform.¹

The system lets personnel conduct deep research, format documents, and analyze video and imagery at speeds that were impossible just months ago.

Hegseth expects every member of the department to log in and incorporate AI into their daily workflows immediately.

This isn't some limited pilot program or slow rollout to a handful of units.

The Pentagon just gave cutting-edge AI tools to the entire fighting force in one massive deployment.

Google Cloud's Gemini for Government earned the contract because of its robust security certifications for handling sensitive but unclassified military data.

The platform's certified for Controlled Unclassified Information and Impact Level 5 clearance, meaning it can process sensitive military information within the Pentagon's cloud infrastructure.

"The Department is tapping into America's commercial genius, and we're embedding generative AI into our daily battle rhythm," Hegseth stated.²

More AI platforms are coming soon, with xAI's Grok family of models already added to give employees additional capabilities for routine work involving sensitive information.

China's military AI surge forcing America's hand

The Pentagon didn't make this move because AI seemed like a cool new toy to experiment with.

China's been developing AI-powered weapons systems at breakneck speed, and that's forcing America to respond decisively.

A new congressional report revealed that China built 350 new intercontinental missile silos and expanded its nuclear warhead stockpile by 20% in just the past year.³

That's what the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission calls a "war footing."

China unveiled a new 6G-based electronic warfare platform in mid-2025 that can coordinate radar jamming and signal interception across massive distances.

The system uses artificial intelligence to synchronize attacks on American and allied radar networks as far away as Guam, the Marshall Islands, and Alaska.⁴

Beijing's pushing what they call "intelligentized warfare" – using AI to dominate every aspect of future conflicts.

The Pentagon's latest report on Chinese military developments confirms China continues accelerating development of military AI, biotechnology, and hypersonic missiles.⁵

China's announced defense budget has nearly doubled since Xi Jinping became General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party.

The People's Liberation Army measures its concepts and capabilities directly against what they call the "strong enemy" – the United States.

Navy veteran and former Pentagon official Emelia Probasco, now a senior fellow at Georgetown University's Center for Security and Emerging Technology, explained that China's "doing rapid experimentation across all domains of warfare."⁶

"They're gathering information to target individuals for espionage and using data to create more sophisticated cyber-attacks," Probasco noted.

The race between the two superpowers to master military AI isn't theoretical anymore.

It's happening right now, and the side that falls behind faces catastrophic consequences.

GenAI gives American troops the AI edge they need

GenAI.mil serves as what Probasco calls a critical "sandbox" for military personnel to learn how AI can revolutionize their workflows.

Prior to this platform's launch, troops were either using less capable tools or – even worse – going to their home computers to experiment with AI, which created massive security risks.

"Now they've got a more secure environment where they can experiment with these tools and really start to learn what they're good for and what they're not good for," Probasco explained.⁷

The platform gives the entire Department of War workforce hands-on experience with AI before more sophisticated military systems using AI get deployed to actual combat situations.

Those advanced weapons systems are already under development but aren't the kind of thing the Pentagon announces publicly or rolls out for everyone to experiment with.

"That's not going to be rolled out in a big public announcement where everybody can play with it," Probasco stated.⁸

The GenAI platform prepares American forces for the more sophisticated AI-enabled weapon systems coming down the pipeline.

China's not waiting around for America to catch up.

The People's Liberation Army's developing unmanned intelligent combat systems, enhancing battlefield situational awareness with AI, and conducting multi-domain operations all powered by artificial intelligence.

Chinese military strategists believe the force that best gathers and exploits information will gain the decisive advantage in future wars.

That's exactly why giving every American service member immediate access to frontier AI capabilities matters so much.

Hegseth's making damn sure that when the next conflict erupts, American forces have trained with the AI tools that could mean the difference between victory and defeat.
