Pete Hegseth Just Proved Every Democrat Wrong About the US Army With One Number

Jul 20, 2026

Four years ago, Biden's woke military was 15,000 soldiers short and bleeding out.

Now Hegseth's Army just hit 61,500 new recruits with four months still left in the year.

What Army Secretary Dan Driscoll revealed Wednesday is something Democrats claimed was impossible.

61,500 Recruits in Eight and a Half Months

Driscoll announced the milestone at the Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle – a gathering that included President Trump, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine, and the CEOs of Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and General Dynamics.

"Sixty-one thousand, five hundred new recruits are joining the United States Army," Driscoll told Breitbart News editor-in-chief Alex Marlow. "We hit that about eight and a half months into our year."

He didn't bury the lede: "This is specifically and directly because of Secretary of War Hegseth's and the President's push on lethality and their push on excellence."

That's not spin.

That's the contrast in plain numbers.

In fiscal year 2022, the Army missed its recruiting goal by 15,000 soldiers – the worst shortfall since the all-volunteer force began in 1973.

In fiscal year 2023, it missed by another 10,000.

Biden's Pentagon responded by pouring tens of millions into DEI programs and lowering standards.

They got fewer soldiers.

Trump came in, cleared out the diversity bureaucrats, and told America's young men the Army was for warriors again.

They got 61,500.

What Actually Moves Young Men to Enlist

Driscoll was upfront that process improvements played a role.

"On the boring side, we've mechanistically improved some of our recruiting things," he said. "We've onboarded Salesforce, a customer relationship management tool that helps us track and do a better job of engaging with recruits."

Then he said the quiet part out loud: "But that's not what does it."

What does it is the message.

Young men aren't showing up because the Army ran better email campaigns.

They're showing up because Trump and Hegseth told them the Army was getting serious again – serious about lethality, serious about excellence, serious about winning.

"They want to join the United States Army because of the challenge," Driscoll said of new recruits he meets in basic training. "They want to join the United States Army because of our history of excellence. And they want to join the United States Army to serve their nation, and President Trump has unlocked their ability to do that."

Driscoll added one line that cuts through every liberal talking point of the last four years: "The United States Army has not cut back on standards."

It didn't lower the bar.

It raised the mission.

And young Americans answered.

The Woke Army Bet Everything on DEI and Lost

Under Biden, the Army shed 36,000 soldiers and cut its annual recruiting goal from 65,000 down to 55,000 just to avoid admitting failure – then still fell short.

While recruitment collapsed, the Pentagon kept spending.

Tens of millions went to DEI programs each year – money that didn't sign a single contract, didn't fill a single bunk, didn't make a single unit more lethal.

Heritage Foundation analysts called 2022 "arguably the most challenging recruiting year" since the all-volunteer force was established in 1973.

Trump came in and changed one thing above everything else: the mission.

A kid in rural Ohio or north Georgia doesn't want to join a social experiment.

He wants to join the most lethal fighting force on earth.

For four years, Biden's Army was selling itself as the former. Now it's back to being the latter.

That's the Trump bump.

It's not a mystery.
