There’s something refreshing about watching successful Americans actually build something instead of just cashing endorsement checks.
While most celebrity "business ventures" are just slapping their name on someone else’s product, a few athletes are rolling up their sleeves and creating real businesses that employ real people.
And Patrick Mahomes’ mother just spilled the beans about one detail from her son’s upcoming steakhouse that shows how seriously he’s taking this venture.
The family business gets personal
Randi Mahomes isn’t just watching from the sidelines as her son Patrick and Travis Kelce prepare to open 1587 Prime Steakhouse in Kansas City.
She’s getting the insider treatment – and loving every minute of it.
During a red carpet interview with PEOPLE magazine, the proud mom couldn’t hide her excitement about the restaurant’s September 17th opening.¹
"How do I get a reservation?" she joked. "I’m like, Patrick, come on."
But here’s where it gets interesting.
Randi revealed that Patrick has been personally updating her on every menu detail and showing her photos of the restaurant’s development.
The menu isn’t some generic steakhouse fare dreamed up by corporate consultants.
It’s filled with favorite dishes inspired by Patrick and his wife, Brittany – the kind of personal touches that show these guys actually care about what they’re serving.
"I’m like, ‘What about mom here?’" Randi laughed. "But I love everything. I’ve tasted a lot of it, and so, it’s been fun."
When athletes become real businessmen
The restaurant, named after Kelce and Mahomes’ jersey numbers, will occupy 10,000 square feet across two floors in Kansas City’s Loews Hotel.
This isn’t some pop-up publicity stunt.
They’ve been hiring operations managers, bar managers, and executive chefs since April.
In July, Mahomes and Kelce posted a video of themselves doing actual taste tests – trying different cuts of steak and multiple butter varieties that included specialty options like white truffle and bone marrow.²
"That food was better than I could have imagined!!" Kelce commented at the time. "KC get ready baby!!"
Even Kelce’s mom, Donna, showed up to check out the location and pose for photos with the restaurant signage.
"Can’t wait for Patrick’s & Travis’ steakhouse to open on the first floor of Loew’s hotel in Kansas City!!!" she posted on Facebook.
The real story here
Here’s what makes this different from your typical celebrity restaurant disaster.
These guys are actually involved.
Mahomes didn’t just license his name and walk away – he’s taste-testing butter combinations and updating his mom on menu progress like it’s his baby.
The timing isn’t coincidental either.
The grand opening on September 17th? That’s Patrick’s birthday.
His mom even called him out on it: "I know you didn’t plan that, because he’s not a planner like that."
But the fact that it worked out that way tells you how much this means to him.
"I didn’t know he would be that excited about a restaurant," Randi admitted. "But he really, really is."
You want to know what this really represents?
It’s two guys at the peak of their athletic careers who understand that building something lasting requires more than just showing up.
They’re creating jobs, investing in their community, and putting their reputations on the line with every steak that walks out the door.
The restaurant opens two weeks after the NFL season kicks off – right when Kansas City will be buzzing with football fever.
Smart business timing from guys who clearly understand that success in sports and success in business both require the same thing: showing up and doing the work.
