Yellowstone fans got everything they wanted in the series finale.
Kayce Dutton finally found peace with his family.
But one grim detail about the Yellowstone spinoff has fans convinced something terrible happened.
CBS dropped the trailer for Y: Marshals, the upcoming Yellowstone spinoff centered on Luke Grimes' Kayce Dutton character.
The new show picks up roughly a year after Yellowstone ended with Kayce joining an elite unit of U.S. Marshals.
Fans expected to see Kayce's wife Monica and their son Tate in the spinoff.
But Monica is nowhere to be found.
Yellowstone Spinoff Showrunner Makes No Mention of Monica Dutton
The original series ended with Kayce, Monica, and Tate getting their happy ending at East Camp after years of violence.
Kayce sold the Dutton Ranch to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Reservation for $1.25 an acre.
That was the price his ancestor James Dutton paid when the family first settled the land in 1883.
The sale came with one condition – Kayce and his family could stay on a small parcel at East Camp where they built a house.
After everything the Duttons went through, fans were relieved to see Kayce finally escape the cycle of violence that claimed his father and brothers.
Y: Marshals was supposed to show how that peace played out.
Instead, the CBS spinoff appears to be ripping Kayce away from domestic bliss and throwing him back into danger as a U.S. Marshal.
The official logline reads: "With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region's war on violence."¹
Showrunner Spencer Hudnut told Entertainment Weekly that Kayce is "a changed man" after having downtime to "confront some of his demons and really focus on being a father."²
But here's where things get weird.
Hudnut spent his entire interview talking about Kayce as a father without once mentioning Monica.
"I think Kayce primarily always saw himself as a provider and a protector to his son, but maybe left the parenting to his wife," Hudnut explained. "But as he's had a little more time on the home front, one of the things we get to see is the bond between Kayce and his son and also just seeing Kayce beginning to see a lot more of himself in his son as well."³
Wait – "left the parenting to his wife"?
That's past tense.
Not a single word about Monica or Kayce's marriage.
The showrunner is talking about fatherhood in a way that suggests Kayce is doing it alone.
Trailer Shows Kayce Mourning at Fresh Grave
The trailer opens with Kayce's voiceover as he climbs a hillside to kneel at a grave.
"I fought every day to get out from under the weight of the Yellowstone," Grimes says. "I've lost my teammates, my parents, even my brothers. I know sometimes good men have to do bad things. But I'm trying to find a new beginning."⁴
The grave appears freshly dug with rocks stacked as a marker.
It's not located at the Dutton family cemetery, which sits on land now owned by the Broken Rock Reservation.
The backdrop looks like East Camp – the last place Kayce, Monica, and Tate lived together as a family.
Kayce mentions losing his "teammates," "parents," and "brothers" in the voiceover.
He doesn't mention his wife.
That omission is deafening.
CBS has refused to confirm whether Kelsey Asbille will appear in Y: Marshals.
She's not listed in any of the casting announcements.
Asbille hasn't posted on social media since the Yellowstone series finale in December 2024.
Her last Instagram post showed her with Grimes in character as Kayce and Monica with the caption: "One episode left. To share the screen with Luke over these past 7 years was such a dream."⁵
That reads like a goodbye.
Brecken Merrill is confirmed to return as 17-year-old Tate Dutton.
Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty are back as Thomas Rainwater and Mo.
But Monica? Radio silence.
Taylor Sheridan Has Form for Killing Off Major Characters
Yellowstone fans know Taylor Sheridan doesn't hesitate to kill beloved characters.
Kevin Costner's John Dutton was murdered and his death staged as a suicide.
Wes Bentley's Jamie Dutton was killed by his sister Beth and dumped at the "train station."
Lee Dutton died in the series premiere.
The show has never shied away from tragedy.
Monica already survived a car accident that sent her into labor and killed her and Kayce's son John Dutton IV.
That baby is buried in the Dutton family cemetery.
If Monica is dead in Y: Marshals, wouldn't she want to be buried near her child?
Unless the grave Kayce visits at East Camp is Monica's final resting place.
The location makes sense if Kayce wanted to keep his wife close to home rather than on land he no longer owns.
Some fans speculate the grave could be for Jamie Dutton.
But that doesn't track with Kayce's character.
Jamie betrayed the family by orchestrating John Dutton's murder through his girlfriend Sarah Atwood.
Beth killed Jamie and had his body disposed of at the train station – the Dutton family's dumping ground for their enemies.
Kayce had complicated feelings about Jamie, but building him a memorial after that ultimate betrayal seems unlikely.
The showrunner's carefully worded comments suggest Monica won't be part of Y: Marshals.
Hudnut emphasized that Kayce "left the parenting to his wife" – past tense – and is now building a deeper bond with Tate.
That's exactly what would happen if Monica died and Kayce became a single father.
Y: Marshals premieres March 1, 2026 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
The 13-episode first season will also stream on Paramount+.
CBS is banking on the Yellowstone franchise to deliver huge ratings.
But killing Monica Dutton off-screen between shows would be a gut punch to fans who invested seven years watching Kayce and Monica's relationship.
The couple went through hell together – family conflicts, Kayce's PTSD, Monica's near-death experience, losing their son.
They finally made it to the other side.
Erasing that happy ending before the spinoff even starts feels like a betrayal of what Yellowstone built.
Unless Sheridan has something else planned.
Maybe Monica left Kayce.
Maybe she's alive but CBS is keeping it secret to generate buzz.
But every clue points to tragedy.
The grave at East Camp, the showrunner talking about Kayce as a single dad, Monica's complete absence from promotional materials – it all adds up to one thing.
Something terrible happened between the Yellowstone finale and Y: Marshals.
And fans are going to be devastated when they find out what.
