No President Fixed the White House for 70 Years and Donald Trump Just Revealed What They Left Behind

Sep 15, 2026

Harry Truman found rats in the walls of the White House.

Now Trump has revealed the building was still deteriorating more than 70 years later – and no president between them did a thing about it.

What Donald Trump found when he got there is something the media does not want you to see.

The Building Was Falling Apart Before Trump Arrived

The exterior "skin" of the White House was practically falling off the building.

That's not a political talking point.

That's what Trump wrote on Truth Social Sunday – and history proves it.

When Truman moved into the executive mansion after World War II, engineers discovered the floors buckled underfoot, the walls were separating from the frame, and rodents had worked their way through gaps in the structure.

The second floor was condemned as a fire hazard, and the Commissioner of Public Buildings concluded the whole thing was standing only "by force of habit."

Truman gutted the entire interior and rebuilt it from scratch, finishing in 1952.

That was the last major renovation of the White House – until now.

More than 70 years of patch jobs, ignored problems, and cosmetic fixes while the real structural issues piled up underneath.

Trump walked in and called it a "dump."

He was right.

What Trump Is Actually Building

The renovation isn't just paint and curtains.

Trump has fortified the North Portico entrance for security purposes and repaired the exterior that was visibly coming apart.

He commissioned a 90,000-square-foot ballroom and military complex on the grounds – a project presidents have reportedly wanted for 150 years and that the military has sought for a century.

That ballroom is now 65 percent complete, ahead of schedule, and under budget.

American companies and patriotic donors are paying for it – zero taxpayer dollars.

The Supreme Court greenlit the project in August after a lower court tried to shut it down, with Chief Justice John Roberts issuing the initial order to keep construction moving.

Meanwhile, Trump is also renovating the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool – which had been leaking for years and sitting empty – the Kennedy Center, and exterior structures across the federal campus that had been allowed to rot under administration after administration.

The Media Wants You to Think This Is Outrageous

Preservationists are suing.

Democrats are complaining.

The media is calling it a "vanity project."

These are the same people who said nothing while the White House exterior was literally falling off the building.

They said nothing while the reflecting pool sat empty and leaking.

They said nothing while the Kennedy Center crumbled.

But the moment Trump picks up a hammer, suddenly everyone has strong opinions about historic preservation.

Theodore Roosevelt added the West Wing.

FDR built the East Wing to conceal a bunker beneath it.

Truman gutted the entire building down to its outer walls.

Every president who looked at the White House and saw something broken fixed it.

And the fact that Trump is doing it faster, cheaper, and without a single dollar of taxpayer money on the ballroom is what really has them furious.

The White House is in better shape today than it's been in decades.

The people trying to stop it would have let it keep falling apart.
