Newsom Spent Two Years Blocking Voter ID and Californians Just Handed Him a Humiliating Defeat

Mar 10, 2026

Gavin Newsom signed a law in 2024 making it illegal for California cities to require voter ID.

Now 1.3 million Californians just signed a petition to put voter ID in the state constitution.

That's not a setback for Newsom – that's voters looking the governor of California in the face and telling him exactly what they think of his agenda.

How Newsom Banned the California Voter ID Initiative and Triggered a Revolt

The story starts in Huntington Beach, where residents voted 53% to 47% in March 2024 to require ID at the polls for municipal elections.

Newsom's response wasn't to listen.

His response was to sue the city and then sign legislation – SB 1174 – banning every local government in California from requiring voter identification at all.

California voters approved a common-sense measure, and Gavin Newsom made the idea itself illegal.

Now Newsom is on the national stage pushing the same message, telling Americans the SAVE America Act – which would require proof of citizenship to vote – is somehow Jim Crow.

In February, on an episode of his podcast with Rep. Jim Clyburn, Newsom argued the SAVE Act was unconstitutional because Americans can't find their birth certificates.

His exact words: "You've got to find your birth certificate. I have no clue where mine is."

A man who traveled to the Munich Security Conference – requiring a valid passport – lectured the American people that proving citizenship to vote is too hard.

This week Newsom said out loud that if the SAVE America Act passes, Democrats "will lose this country."

He meant Democrats will lose elections.

Everyone knows it.

1.3 Million Signatures and the SAVE Act Put Democrats on the Wrong Side of 83 Percent

Reform California didn't just clear the signature threshold – they lapped it.

The initiative needed 874,641 signatures.

They submitted 1.3 million, gathered by 18,000 grassroots volunteers across all 58 California counties.

Assembly Member Carl DeMaio, the Republican leading the effort, says nearly half those signatures came from Democrats and independents.

Seventy-one percent of Californians support the initiative, according to polling cited by the campaign.

That tracks nationally: a Harvard-Harris poll from late February found 85% of Americans believe only U.S. citizens should vote – including 82% of Democrats.

The California Voter ID Initiative would amend the state constitution directly – bypassing Newsom, bypassing the Democratic supermajority in the legislature, and making it impossible for Sacramento politicians to simply ignore the voters again.

Show photo ID in person, provide the last four digits of a government ID number on your mail ballot, have your citizenship verified when you register, and watch the state audit those voter rolls every year.

The state would provide free voter ID cards to any eligible voter who requests one.

The Left's objections collapsed the moment DeMaio made that offer.

The Pattern Newsom Hopes You Don't Notice

This is not the first time Democrats got caught running against their own voters on election integrity.

Wisconsin voters approved a constitutional amendment requiring voter ID in 2025.

Thirty-six states now have some form of voter identification requirement.

Every country in Europe requires in-person voters to show photo ID – as do Canada, Japan, South Korea, India, Mexico, and Brazil.

The United States – under Democrat policy preferences – is an outlier among the world's democracies.

Democrats have spent years insisting voter ID is racist suppression while 70% of their own voters tell pollsters they support it.

Newsom isn't protecting democracy.

He's protecting the status quo his party depends on – a system where California voters self-attest citizenship on the honor system, voter rolls go unaudited, and no one is ever required to prove they are who they say they are.

The California Voter ID Initiative goes to November voters for ratification.

If it passes, no Sacramento politician – including Gavin Newsom – can ever touch it again.

Newsom told Americans this week that election integrity will cost Democrats the country.

He should have kept that thought to himself.
