Michelle Obama Turned a Military Base Story Into a Racial Grievance and Megyn Kelly Had Enough

Mar 8, 2026

Michelle Obama spent eight years in the most powerful house on earth – with chefs, staff, security, and a glam team – and somehow still managed to collect a grievance at every stop.

This week she added a new one to the pile.

Now Megyn Kelly is calling it what it is, and the words she used are going to be hard to forget.

Michelle Obama's IMO Podcast Just Gave Us the Clearest Look Yet at Who She Really Is

Obama was interviewing comedian Conan O'Brien on her IMO podcast when O'Brien brought up a trip he made with her to a U.S. military base in the Middle East back in 2015.

It was a perfect opening to say something meaningful about the men and women who serve this country.

Instead, Obama turned the moment into a lecture about how the first Black family in the White House had to be "damn near perfect" – and took a shot at President Trump while she was at it.

"There's absolutely no way that the behavior in this current administration would have been accepted by the first Black family in the White House," she told O'Brien, adding that Trump got to "file bankruptcy over and over again and still be considered a successful business person" while she had to dot every i and cross every t.

Megyn Kelly watched the clip and said what millions of Americans were already thinking.

"She is so small-minded," Kelly said on her show. "This is the only lens through which she sees her experience as first lady."

Kelly noted that O'Brien had set the whole exchange up as a vehicle for grievance – and Obama was happy to use it.

"What I was waiting for him to say was maybe, 'You were so great with the troops' – the normal instinct by most patriots is to make it about the guys and the gals you saw at the military base," Kelly said. "But both of them were determined to make it about her."

Michelle Obama Has Been Complaining About the White House Since 2008

This wasn't a slip.

In 2008, she told a campaign crowd it was the first time in her adult lifetime she was "really proud" of her country – meaning pride arrived only when her husband's political career validated it.

She called the White House role "confining."

She complained about needing a glam team, about her hair, about scrutiny, about not receiving the "grace" other first ladies received – all while the mainstream media gave her three Vogue covers and eight years of worshipful coverage.

She told Americans the country wasn't "ready" for a woman president and had "a lot of growing up to do."

She landed a $65 million book deal, multiple luxury properties, and a global speaking career – and still frames every public appearance around what America owes her.

The podcast she appeared on this week is the same one where she spent multiple episodes talking about how hard her marriage has been.

What the White House Said

The Trump administration didn't let it slide.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle responded directly: "President Trump was overwhelmingly elected by nearly 80 million Americans to deliver on his popular and commonsense agenda. The President is working 24/7 to Make America Great Again and he will not stop fighting for the American people."

Trump has been in office weeks and already renegotiated trade deals, secured the southern border, and taken decisive military action that previous administrations spent years avoiding.

Michelle Obama has spent those same weeks selling a book about her wardrobe and inserting racial grievances into a podcast conversation about a military base visit from a decade ago.

Why Michelle Obama Keeps Attacking Trump From a Podcast Nobody Watches

There's a reason Obama keeps showing up on podcasts to relitigate the last decade – she lost, and she knows it.

Kamala Harris ran on the Obama coalition's logic and got crushed.

The electorate sent a clear message that the grievance framework doesn't run the country anymore.

Michelle Obama got her eight years. She got the mansion, the book deals, the Netflix contract, and the speaking fees.

What she didn't get was a grateful country on one knee – and that's what this has always been about.

Megyn Kelly said it plainly: at some point, somebody near her needs to point out that she's one of the richest and most famous women in the world, and the constant grievance isn't a good look.

Nobody near Michelle Obama is going to say that.

So Megyn Kelly did.
