Marco Rubio Shut Down a Democrat Who Asked About His Shoes During an Iran War Hearing

Jun 8, 2026

America is at war with Iran.

A California Democrat used her five minutes to ask the Secretary of State about his shoes.

And what Marco Rubio said next stopped the whole room cold.

What Sara Jacobs Actually Did With Her Time

The House Foreign Affairs Committee had Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the chair Wednesday to answer for the most significant military conflict of the Trump administration.

Rep. Sara Jacobs of California had five minutes.

She used them to ask about Florsheim shoes.

Jacobs opened by accusing Rubio of having trouble admitting facts, then landed her prepared punchline: “You couldn’t admit the shoes the president bought you were too big.”

Rubio looked genuinely confused.

“I don’t know about the shoes,” he said. “I mean, Trump gave me some Florsheim shoes that are actually pretty good, they fit fine. I don’t know what she’s talking about.”

Jacobs circled back moments later with a compliment.

“Your shoes look very nice today, Mr. Secretary.”

Rubio stared at her.

“How can you see them? They’re way down here,” he said. “We’re talking about shoes. Are you guys kidding me? I mean, is this the Foreign Affairs Committee or is this, like, a circus? What is this?”

Democrats Had Bigger Plans Than Just the Shoes

The shoe moment was the punchline. But the whole hearing was the joke.

Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York spent his time demanding to know whether Trump had ordered military strikes against Iran to protect his personal stock portfolio.

Rubio shut that down cold.

“Not once,” he said. “Just to be clear, not a single time, not even for a millisecond, has the president ever discussed his personal economics and relations to war or any public policy that he’s made. And I’ve been in every one of his foreign policy meetings for the most part.”

Democrats also demanded yes-or-no answers on complex foreign policy questions – cutting Rubio off mid-sentence when his answers ran longer than they liked.

“You get asked questions for five minutes and you don’t get time to answer,” Rubio complained. “It’s not a hearing. Is this a dunk tank? What is this?”

Jacobs even asked Rubio who won the 2020 presidential election – at a Foreign Affairs Committee hearing about Iran.

“I’m not here to answer about 2020,” Rubio told her. “This is a foreign affairs committee.”

Democrats Have Been Running This Play for Decades

This is not new.

Speaker Mike Johnson called it last year when Pam Bondi faced the same treatment before the House Judiciary Committee: “These are unserious people, and they demonstrate that with their antics in the committee hearings now, which have really turned into theatrics.”

Minority party members grandstand more than anyone else, and they do it because it raises money.

A viral moment of mocking a Trump cabinet member is worth more to Sara Jacobs in small-dollar donations than anything she could accomplish through actual oversight.

The five-minute questioning round guarantees it works every time.

Witnesses can stall or deflect, lawmakers can interrupt and cut off answers, and by the time the buzzer rings, nobody learned anything – but everybody got a clip.

That is the entire strategy.

This Is What They Do When They Have No Power and No Plan

Democrats have no votes to block Rubio’s foreign policy.

They have no legislation to advance.

They have no alternative Iran strategy to present.

What they have is a committee hearing, a camera, and five minutes to produce a clip.

Jacobs didn’t ask about Iran nuclear negotiations, where Rubio testified there is now a real prospect of Iran agreeing to limits on their nuclear program.

She didn’t ask about the Strait of Hormuz, where Rubio laid out precise American demands – declaring the strait open, stopping mine placements, ending the toll on commercial ships.

She asked about shoes.

That tells you everything about what the Democratic Party has become.

They were given five minutes in front of the Secretary of State during a live war and used them on Florsheims.

Rubio called it a circus.

He was being generous.
