Marco Rubio Just Pulled the George Bush 1980 Playbook on JD Vance

May 20, 2026

George H.W. Bush called Reagan's tax plan "voodoo economics" – then spent eight years as his VP and won the presidency himself.

Marco Rubio just made the same bet on JD Vance.

And if history is any guide, he may have just guaranteed himself the White House.

Rubio Is Climbing and He Just Stepped Aside

Marco Rubio had every reason to stay quiet.

An AtlasIntel survey taken May 4–7 put him ahead of JD Vance by nearly 16 points – the first major poll to place Rubio in front.

Prediction market Kalshi just ticked him past Vance as the most likely 2028 nominee.

Donors are calling.

And then Rubio went on NBC News and said: "JD is a very good friend of mine. If JD runs for president, I think he'd be a phenomenal candidate. I've said publicly, and I'll say it again, I'll be the first person to sign up and support him."

The first person.

That is not the language of a man who wants to win.

Or it's exactly that.

What Rubio Is Actually Playing

Bush did it. Rubio is doing it now.

In 1980, George H.W. Bush ran hard against Ronald Reagan in the Republican primary, called Reagan's economic plan "voodoo economics," and lost badly.

Then he swallowed his pride, joined the ticket, served loyally for eight years, and won the presidency himself in 1988.

Bush understood something most politicians never learn: loyalty is currency.

Rubio lived that same lesson the hard way.

He ran against Trump in 2016 and took his lumps.

He spent years proving his loyalty – in the Senate, on the Sunday shows, and now as the most traveled Secretary of State in recent memory.

Every time Rubio defers to Vance, he is depositing into an account that pays out in 2028 or 2032.

The math is simple.

If Vance runs and wins, Rubio is his most prominent supporter – positioned for Vice President or Secretary of State again, either way center stage.

If Vance does not run – and veteran observer Mark Halperin has floated that possibility, citing Vance's young family and a new child on the way – Rubio steps into the vacuum as the consensus choice.

Halperin's assessment: if Vance sits out, Rubio would be pretty close to a lock for the nomination.

Trump Already Told You the Answer

Donald Trump does not do anything by accident.

Last week at the White House Rose Garden dinner honoring National Police Week, Trump turned to a room full of law enforcement officials and ran an impromptu straw poll.

"Who likes JD Vance?"

Cheers.

"Who likes Marco Rubio?"

More cheers.

"Sounds like a good ticket," Trump said, grinning.

Then: "By the way, I do believe that's a dream team."

He made sure everyone understood what he was not doing.

"That does not mean you have my endorsement under any circumstance."

Classic Trump – withhold the prize until it creates maximum leverage.

The party is watching two capable figures compete in the most courteous primary in modern Republican history, one man deferring to the other, the other saying it is among "the few topics that I want to talk about less."

Both working their current jobs at full throttle.

This is what a healthy succession looks like.

Compare that to what Democrats are doing right now.

Kamala Harris is sitting at 38 percent in her own party's primary polls, trailing AOC and Gavin Newsom in some surveys.

A self-described democratic socialist who wants to nationalize healthcare is the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination.

Republicans are fielding two seasoned cabinet-level officials with actual governing records.

Democrats are hoping a congresswoman from the Bronx with a GrubHub resume can win a general election.

Rubio was right to say what he said.

The MAGA movement does not end with Trump.

It is just getting started.
