Kamala Harris lost to Donald Trump by a landslide.
But a brand new poll shows her beating JD Vance in a hypothetical matchup.
There’s only one Republican in the race who flips that result – and Washington, DC just noticed.
The Number That Shifted the 2028 Race
The Emerson College and The Hill survey tested five matchups against Democrats, and Rubio outperformed Vance in four of them.
The Harris number is the one that matters.
Vance loses to Kamala Harris 45–49. Rubio beats her by 5 points.
That's a ten-point swing off the same losing Democrat who couldn't close the deal against Trump in 2024.
The pattern held across the rest of the field.
Gavin Newsom leads Vance by 5 – leads Rubio by only 2.

Jon Ossoff beats Vance by 5, Rubio by 3.
AOC – the only Democrat who loses to both – trails Rubio by 5 and Vance by 2.
Pete Buttigieg is the lone exception, holding a 5-point edge against both Republicans.
At least 6 percent of voters were undecided in every matchup.
That's a lot of room before a single primary vote is cast.
How Rubio Went From 7 Percent to This
Six months ago this race looked settled.
In February's University of New Hampshire poll, Vance led Rubio 53–7 among likely GOP primary voters.
The vice president was the heir apparent – the MAGA torch-carrier, the inevitable successor.
Then Marco Rubio led the operation that captured Nicolás Maduro.
On January 3, U.S. forces struck Caracas and brought the Venezuelan dictator to American soil to face narco-trafficking charges.
Rubio was the architect.
Karoline Leavitt said it plainly – "Secretary Rubio has done a great job advancing President Trump's foreign policy agenda as Secretary of State."

The pressure campaign against Iran followed.
By July, the same New Hampshire poll showed Vance at 36 percent and Rubio at 26.
The gap went from 46 points to 10 in five months.
At the Western Conservative Summit in Colorado, Rubio won the straw poll outright – 57 percent of 500-plus attendees.
Vance finished second at 21 percent.
What Trump Said in the Oval Office
President Trump hasn't picked sides publicly.
But he told donors in the Oval Office earlier this month: "At the end of the day, we need to elect JD." When that report surfaced, Trump walked it back – said Vance is "great" but it's "way too early to even be thinking about that."
Trump told Miranda Devine on the New York Post's Pod Force One that Vance and Rubio together would make "a great team."
Asked how anyone beats that combination, Trump said: "I don't know how you beat them if they're together."
Rubio has already said he'll defer to Vance if the vice president runs.
Vance said in June he'll discuss a presidential run with his wife Usha after the November midterms.
The couple welcomed their fourth child in July.
The Number Democrats Are Praying Nobody Reads
Democrats spent two years building the story that Harris lost because of Biden, the economy, the bad timing – everything except Harris herself.
The Emerson poll just burned that argument to the ground.
Against Vance – the MAGA populist Democrats have spent years calling dangerous – Harris wins.
Against Rubio – the Secretary of State who just arrested a dictator – she loses by 5.

The electorate that rejected her in 2024 moves another 10 points away when the Republican on the ballot has actual foreign policy wins on his record.
AOC fares worst of the Democrat field.
She trails Rubio by 5 and Vance by 2 – the socialist wing's reward for being the only thing more unelectable than Kamala Harris.
What this poll measures, at bottom, is whether Republican wins translate into general election strength.
Capturing Maduro translates.
Dismantling Iran's Western Hemisphere presence translates.
Two years of Vance doing the vice president's job – a job almost nobody notices – doesn't translate the same way.
Trump told the country he doesn't know how you beat Vance and Rubio together.
The poll just showed you what happens when you only have one of them.
