A 69-year-old California man is fighting for his life after someone beat him nearly to death outside his own home.
His crime was flying American flags.
What police found when they arrived tells you everything about where we are as a country.
The Neighbor Who Decided Flags Were Worth Killing Over
Wednesday afternoon in Escondido, California, officers responded to reports of an assault near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street.
They found an elderly man with what police described as "significant injuries."
A good Samaritan who tried to intervene was also hurt.
The suspect was gone by the time police arrived – but they found him half a mile away.
His name is Thomas Caleb Butler, 32 years old.
He lives around the corner from the victim.

Butler wasn't a stranger passing by who snapped.
He was a neighbor who knew exactly where this man lived, knew exactly what was on that property, and apparently decided those flags were reason enough to nearly kill a 69-year-old.
He's now sitting in the Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County on an attempted murder charge.
What Made This Home a Target
The property on East Mission Avenue has been known in the Escondido neighborhood for years.
American flags tower over the side of the house.
Pro-Trump banners.
Locals call it the "Trump House."
Video from the aftermath shows a man pointing officers toward evidence and gesturing as though someone had been kicked or stomped.
Blood was visible at the foot of the driveway.

Police placed evidence markers in the street and photographed the front of the home – near a mailbox and a parked pickup truck flying two American flags from the bed.
A man was nearly stomped to death in that driveway because he chose to display support for the President of the United States on his own property.
This Is What Gavin Newsom Built
This isn't an isolated incident.
It's the latest in a string of violent attacks against Trump supporters and their property that the media covers for three days and quietly buries.
A man in an inflatable Trump costume was attacked on camera at a "No Kings" protest.
A Florida county Democrat Party chairman was arrested and charged with battery after attacking a disabled veteran at a similar rally.
Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated by a gunman who engraved his bullets with anti-fascist rhetoric.
And through all of it, Gavin Newsom – the governor of the state where a 69-year-old man just got stomped in his own driveway for flying American flags – has been standing in front of cameras telling California that Trump supporters are the threat.
On June 10, 2025, he declared from the governor's office that "democracy is under assault before our eyes" and that "this moment we have feared has arrived."
That language has consequences.
When the governor of California spends months telling his state that Trump supporters are the enemies of democracy, he doesn't get to be surprised when someone takes that message seriously.

Thomas Caleb Butler lived around the corner from the Trump House.
He knew exactly what was on that property.
He knew exactly who lived there.
And on Wednesday afternoon, he apparently decided that a 69-year-old man flying American flags in Escondido was part of the assault on democracy his governor had been warning him about.
Newsom has said nothing about the attack.
The blood at the foot of that driveway is real.
The 69-year-old in critical condition is real.
And the governor who spent a year telling California that Trump supporters were the enemy has nothing to say about what happened when someone believed him.
