Lewis University Shut Down Classes for This One Reason and It Has Nothing to Do With Safety

Feb 26, 2026

ICE agents are currently facing an 8,000% increase in death threats, a 1,300% surge in physical assaults, and bounties placed on their heads for their murders – all while they show up every day to remove rapists, pedophiles, and gang members from American neighborhoods.

Now a Catholic university outside Chicago just told those same officers they're too dangerous to share an office building with.

Lewis University didn't get raided, shut down, or threatened by federal agents – they simply discovered that ICE leases administrative office space in the same building as their Oak Brook campus and canceled all in-person classes through March 14.

Lewis University's De Facto Sanctuary Campus Decision Explained

Lewis University, a Catholic institution based in Romeoville, Illinois, operates a satellite campus at 1111 West 22nd Street in Oak Brook serving about 500 students in business and nursing programs.

When the university's provost found out via social media that a fleet of government SUVs had appeared in the parking garage, he confirmed with the landlord that ICE had moved in for administrative operations.

His response was to cancel in-person classes for nearly a month.

"We felt like it was a really volatile, potentially volatile environment this week for our students to attend class," Provost Christopher Sindt told ABC7 Chicago.

Think about what he just said.

The volatility wasn't caused by ICE doing anything threatening – the building houses administrative offices, not a detention facility.

The volatility was the possibility that left-wing protesters might show up and make things difficult.

So Lewis University punished 500 students – disrupted their nursing clinicals, their graduate business classes, their entire semester – to appease people who hate federal law enforcement.

How Catholic Universities Became the Sanctuary Campus Movement's Biggest Allies

The university wrapped this decision in religious language, calling it "aligned with Lewis University's Catholic and Lasallian mission" to "foster a respectful, supportive, and inclusive environment where every individual is valued."

Every individual except, apparently, the federal law enforcement officers enforcing the nation's laws one floor up.

This is the same playbook the broader Catholic institutional network has been running for years.

Fordham University in New York created a dedicated web page advising illegal alien students on how to handle ICE encounters and offered to connect them with pro-bono legal help to fight deportation.

Notre Dame made similar commitments.

Catholic Charities locations became documented destinations for migrants specifically trying to evade deportation proceedings – ICE officers recorded migrants listing Catholic Charities addresses so federal agents couldn't serve their initial court summons, forcing officers to restart the deportation process from scratch.

This is not the Catholic Church's historical mission.

It is a deliberate institutional strategy to obstruct federal immigration law under religious cover.

The People Getting Assaulted Work Down the Hall

While Lewis University protects students from the terrifying sight of government vehicles in a parking garage, the officers they're fleeing are facing an actual war.

DHS confirmed 275 assaults against ICE officers in 2025 – a 1,347% increase over the same period the prior year.

A pedophile and criminal illegal alien hammered an ICE officer in the face with a metal coffee cup, opening a laceration requiring 13 stitches.

A sniper in Dallas fired into an ICE detention facility with shell casings inscribed with anti-ICE messages.

An agent had his finger bitten off by an agitator during Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis.

ICE officers' family members have been doxxed, stalked, and had bounties placed on their heads.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem put it directly: "Sanctuary politicians are contributing to the surge in violent threats and assaults of our officers through their repeated vilification and demonization tactics."

Lewis University just joined that list.

When a Catholic institution formally declares its campus incompatible with law enforcement – not because officers did anything wrong, not because students were threatened, but because federal agents were breathing the same air – that institution has chosen a side against the men and women getting attacked with coffee cups and sniper fire.

They Won't Stop at March 14

Lewis University said it extended the remote learning period through March 14 after "reviewing student feedback and operational constraints."

The school says it hasn't made decisions about the future of its Oak Brook lease.

Here is the decision tree they face: either they stay in a building with ICE and admit this whole exercise was performative theater, or they abandon the campus entirely and announce publicly that they cannot coexist with federal law enforcement.

Fordham, Notre Dame, Catholic Charities – every major Catholic institution has faced this same choice over the past year, and most of them have answered the same way Lewis University just did.

The Catholic Church in America built its institutions to serve Catholics and protect the faith.

Somewhere along the way, a generation of administrators decided their mission was protecting people illegally in the country from the officers enforcing the law – and dressing that obstruction up as Christian charity.

It isn't.

That's institutional cowardice dressed up in Scripture.
