Krispy Kreme just overhauled its menu in a way nobody saw coming.
The donut chain rolled out the biggest changes to its everyday lineup in years.
And Krispy Kreme made one surprising change that left customers stunned.
Krispy Kreme kills off fan favorites to make room for new donuts
Krispy Kreme dropped nine new donut flavors on November 3 — but the catch is that three old favorites got the axe.¹
The chain sent its Original Glazed Blueberry Cake, Original Glazed Lemon Filled, and Cake Batter donuts packing to make room for the newcomers.²
Talk about picking winners and losers.
For donut shops, menu changes aren't just about taste — they're calculated business moves to chase trends and fix weak performers. The three discontinued flavors clearly weren't selling well enough to justify keeping them around.
But Krispy Kreme's not apologizing. Chief brand and product officer Alison Holder said the company spent over a year developing the new lineup.³
They tested flavors, studied social media buzz, and brought back limited-time offerings that fans demanded. This wasn't some spur-of-the-moment decision.
"We are so excited to introduce nine new flavors to our lineup so everyone can build a dozen that is as unique as they are," Holder said.⁴
The chain expanded its everyday menu from 10 full-sized donuts to 16. Six new flavors joined permanently while three rotate seasonally five times per year.⁵
Cookie butter and cheesecake take over where blueberry and lemon left off
The permanent additions show Krispy Kreme chasing what's hot right now instead of sticking with safe classics.
New York Cheesecake brings graham crunch and cheesecake-flavored Kreme. Oreo Cookies and Kreme packs cookie pieces with chocolate icing and vanilla drizzle. Cinnamon Apple Filled tosses apple cinnamon filling in powdered cinnamon coating.⁶
Notice what's missing? Fruit flavors like blueberry and lemon that got cut. Krispy Kreme's betting on indulgent dessert flavors and brand partnerships over traditional fruit-filled donuts.
The seasonal rotation includes Biscoff Cookie Butter Kreme — literally doubling down on cookie butter — plus Maple Iced, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and Pumpkin Spice Cake options right now.⁷
Krispy Kreme even recruited Grammy-winner Montell Jordan to remake his 1995 hit "This is How We Do It" into "This is How We Dozen" for the menu launch.⁸
That's how confident they are this gamble will work. When you're spending money on a celebrity music remake, you're not hedging your bets.
The restaurant industry's survival playbook looks nothing like it used to
Here's what makes this move smart: Krispy Kreme's going all-in on variety when most restaurant chains are slashing menus to cut costs.
The restaurant industry saw sales grow just 3.1% in 2024 — the lowest in 10 years outside the COVID crash.⁹ Nearly 40% of chains saw sales decline last year.¹⁰
Consumer spending at restaurants rose only 2% in 2024 despite people shelling out $1 million at restaurants every minute.¹¹ Giants like McDonald's, Starbucks, and Burger King had flat spending growth.¹²
"Flat is the new up," said David Portalatin of Circana research firm.¹³
So why is Krispy Kreme expanding its menu while competitors streamline? Because the chain understands something crucial about the current market.
Price-sensitive customers want variety and novelty to justify spending more. The companies winning right now — like Raising Cane's and Wingstop with 31% and 41% spending increases — give customers something they can't get anywhere else.¹⁴
Krispy Kreme's betting that nine new flavors including trendy options like cookie butter and Oreo will drive traffic better than keeping around underperforming blueberry and lemon donuts nobody was buying.
The chain's also hedging with its seasonal rotation strategy. Instead of permanent menu bloat, they can test flavors five times per year and keep things fresh without overwhelming operations.
This explains why Krispy Kreme can afford to expand while others cut back. The company hit $1.7 billion in net revenue for 2024 with over 17,982 global locations.¹⁵
They're expanding into McDonald's stores nationwide — targeting 12,000 locations by 2026.¹⁶ That kind of growth requires menu innovation, not playing it safe with the same old blueberry cake donuts.
The restaurant industry learned the hard way that consumers won't keep paying premium prices for the same boring options. Krispy Kreme's gambling that variety wins over value in 2025.
Time will tell if killing off fan favorites to chase trends was the right move. But at least they're taking action while competitors sit around wondering why nobody shows up anymore.
