Democrats dragged an open-borders activist into the Senate to lecture America about immigration – and John Kennedy was waiting for him.
The hearing was titled "Sanctuary Cities: The Cost of Undermining Law and Order."
What happened next is why nobody sends Democrats witnesses anymore.
David Bier Called Trump's Mass Deportation Agenda a Population Purge
David Bier is the Director of Immigration Studies at the CATO Institute.
Democrats called him as their star witness at a Senate Budget Committee hearing Tuesday to make the case that illegal immigrants are good for America.
Bier obliged – telling senators that illegal aliens help reduce the national deficit, insisting the country needs 35 million more workers according to the Social Security Administration, and praising federal judges blocking Trump's deportations as "much braver" than ICE agents.
That last part was too much for Kennedy.
The Louisiana senator didn't argue policy with Bier.
He pulled out Bier's own Bluesky posts and started reading them aloud, one by one.
Post one, from February 11, 2026: Bier had written that Democrat videos urging soldiers to defy Trump's "illegal orders" didn't go far enough – that troops should also refuse orders they personally consider unethical.
Post two, from December 31, 2025: Bier had accused Republicans of trying to "troll their way into us accepting ethnic cleansing."
Post three, from March 2, 2026 – one week before sitting down at that witness table: Bier had called Trump's deportation agenda a "population purge agenda" and said judges blocking it were "much braver than the ICE agents who hide behind masks while violating the Constitution."
Kennedy looked up from his notes.
"What planet did you just parachute in from? You trigger my gag reflex."
The Democratic Party Is All In on Sanctuary Cities and They Proved It
Bier didn't back down.
He defended every post.
On the "ethnic cleansing" charge, Bier pointed to a DHS tweet about 100 million deportations – arguing that removing one-third of the country's population qualified for the label.
On "population purge," he went further under oath than he had on social media: "They're trying to deport U.S.-born citizens, people born here, they are trying to deport them as well. So it's not a mass deportation agenda, it is also an agenda intended to reduce the population of the United States, including U.S.-born people."
When Kennedy kept pressing, Bier tried to run out the clock.
"Your time is up," he told the senator – mid-questioning, live, in a Senate hearing room.
Kennedy ignored him.
Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio had been watching. After his own exchange with Bier, the Ohio Republican delivered a verdict: "You're a smug guy – and that's part of your shtick."
After the hearing ended, Bier told Fox News Digital the confrontation "had nothing to do with illegal immigration" and that the questions were "about immigration generally."
He testified at a hearing called "Sanctuary Cities: The Cost of Undermining Law and Order."
The Democrats' other witness at the same hearing, Sen. Alex Padilla of California, used his time at the table to argue that sanctuary cities make communities "safer, healthier and more prosperous." He closed by declaring – out loud, on the record – "It seems like sanctuary cities are helping to make America great, I said it."
This is the Democratic position in 2026.
They believe illegal aliens are net positives. They believe judges who block deportations are heroes. They believe the men and women of ICE are the real threat.
And when a Republican senator dares to read their own words back to them – on the record, under oath – their response is to tell him his time is up.
Kennedy's response is the only correct one.
