Ken Martin Had Been DNC Chairman Four Days When a Scammer Robbed Him Blind

Aug 2, 2026

The DNC just mortgaged its own headquarters to stay afloat.

Then a stranger sent one email and walked off with $29,000 of donor money.

Find out what the party that wants to run your country couldn't figure out before they wired the cash.

The Con Was So Simple It's Embarrassing

That email pretended to be Ken Martin – who had taken over as DNC chairman just days before the fraud hit.

A staffer read it and wired $28,860.92 to a stranger.

The DNC caught the mistake within minutes, called Wells Fargo, and scrambled to claw back what they could.

They recovered $7,000.

The other $21,860 vanished.

That staffer no longer works for the DNC.

The committee buried this in a letter to the Federal Election Commission in August 2025, labeling it a "misdisbursement of Committee funds" – which is the Washington way of saying a random criminal outsmarted your staff on day four of new leadership.

This Is a Party That Wants Your Trust

The DNC currently sits $2 million in the hole – $16.3 million cash against $18.5 million in debt.

To keep the lights on, the committee pledged its Washington, D.C., headquarters as collateral for a $15 million line of credit.

It has reportedly been asking vendors to hold their invoices until after the midterms.

Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee has $128.5 million cash on hand and zero debt.

That's not a gap – that's a different sport entirely.

DNC spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg said the scam was "a one-off mistake that was promptly caught and addressed," and that the party "takes seriously our duty to protect the funds provided to us by millions of patriotic Americans."

Patriotic Americans who donated money that got wired to a fraudster within days of a new chairman taking over.

Ken Martin Is Already on Fire

The scam disclosure lands on top of a leadership crisis Martin can't outrun.

The New York Times reported this month that Martin has become paranoid about leaks inside the DNC – confronting his own finance director over a meeting he suspected was an attempt to unseat him.

He threw a phone at a staffer's desk in early July, triggering a human resources complaint.

Rep. Sam Liccardo (D-CA) looked at the NOTUS scam report and called for Martin's immediate resignation.

DNC member David Atkins pushed back, arguing that a leadership change 100 days before the midterms would be a "media circus."

That's the choice Democrats are staring at – keep a chairman who lost $29,000 to a phishing email and threw furniture at staff, or detonate their own party leadership before November.

The Party of Competence Can't Run a Basic Email Check

This scam worked because the fraudster timed it to perfection.

The email landed before staff had any feel for Martin's habits, his tone, or how he typically made financial requests – a window that closes fast and the criminal knew it.

That's not a technical failure – that's a basic human intelligence failure inside the organization that claims it should govern you.

The RNC got scammed for $44,000 in 2020 in a similar scheme, so this isn't uniquely a Democrat problem.

But the RNC in 2020 was flush with cash and operational. The DNC in 2025 was already bleeding – pledging its headquarters, delaying vendor payments, and watching its chairman unravel in real time.

The spokesperson called it a one-off mistake.

An organization with $128 million in the bank can afford a one-off mistake.

One that's $2 million in the hole and living off a line of credit cannot.
