Kathy Griffin Lost Everything for This and David Cross Just Did It to a Standing Ovation

Apr 14, 2026

Kathy Griffin held up a fake severed head of Trump and her career was over by morning.

David Cross just told a packed crowd he looks forward to the day Trump is dead.

The audience didn't gasp – they cheered, and then he said the four words that should have everyone furious.

The Joke David Cross Planned and Then Bragged About

Cross dropped a new comedy special called The End of The Beginning of The End and made joking about the President's death the centerpiece of the show.

The bit works like this: Cross sings a song made entirely of Trump quotes, then tells the audience the lyrics were written by "the late Donald Trump."

Then Cross looked out at them and said, "Someday we'll be able to say that."

The crowd went nuts. Those were the four words. And nobody in Hollywood said a thing.

This wasn't a slip.

This wasn't a poorly worded joke that got away from him.

Cross planned it, filmed it, released it, and then went on left-wing podcaster Dean Obeidallah's show to explain why he's proud of it.

David Cross on Podcast: Trump Won Because Americans Aren't Smart Enough

On Obeidallah's show, Cross dropped the comedian act and said what he actually believes.

Obeidallah – who calls himself a "patriotic American" while claiming real patriots should "despise" the President – asked Cross about the crowd's reaction to the death joke.

Cross explained that Trump "makes it personal" and that's why the hatred runs so deep.

Then Obeidallah called Trump a "rapist" on air.

Cross didn't push back.

Instead, he explained why Trump won anyway: because Americans aren't as educated as he is.

Cross told Obeidallah the result speaks to the media, to the "fecklessness of Democrats," and to what he called the true nature of Americans – which, in his telling, traces back to failures in the education system.

Let that translate: 77 million Americans voted wrong because they weren't smart enough to vote the way David Cross wanted.

SNL Did It Last Week and the White House Responded – Hollywood Ignored Both

One week before Cross made news, SNL's Michael Che told his studio audience he thought it was "cool" that Trump was going to the theater – then delivered the punchline: "I mean, what's the worst that could happen?"

The crowd erupted.

The White House condemned it.

Nobody in Hollywood said a word about that either.

Hollywood has been doing this for years – and someone always pays a price, though rarely the comedian.

When Kathy Griffin posed with a prop meant to look like Trump's bloody severed head in 2017, the Secret Service launched an investigation. She was fired from CNN. Her career never fully recovered.

When SNL's John Mulaney joked about senators stabbing Trump like Julius Caesar, the Secret Service opened a file on him.

He was cleared – but the investigation was real.

When comedian Kyle Gass joked onstage that the 2024 assassination attempt on Trump should have succeeded, Jack Black canceled their entire Tenacious D tour within hours.

The double standard is the point. Jokes about Republican presidents are edgy satire.

The same material aimed at a Democrat would end careers before midnight.

But something shifted after the July 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

A real bullet grazed a real president's ear.

A real rally attendee was murdered.

The Secret Service tackled a real shooter.

David Cross filmed this special after that happened.

He knew exactly what "the late Donald Trump" means in 2026.

The Crowd That Cheered After Butler

Cross will say it was just comedy. His fans will say conservatives can't take a joke.

But watch the video.

This wasn't nervous laughter at a dark punchline.

This was a crowd that knew what they were cheering for – and cheered harder when Cross said he hopes to say it for real someday.

That crowd paid for tickets.

They drove to the venue.

They sat in those seats and celebrated the idea of a sitting president dying.

Cross didn't create that sentiment.

He just gave it a microphone.

Hollywood thinks this is brave.

The rest of America knows exactly what it is.
