Karoline Leavitt Destroys Reporter At White House Press Briefing With Four Words About ICE Shooting

Jan 20, 2026

The White House press briefing room exploded Thursday afternoon.

A reporter asked what he thought was a gotcha question.

And Karoline Leavitt shut down one reporter with four words that left the media fuming.

White House Press Briefing Explodes Over ICE Shooting Questions

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt faced off against The Hill's Niall Stanage during Thursday's briefing after he tried to trap her with statistics about ICE deaths.

Stanage rattled off numbers about Americans detained and killed in ICE custody, specifically mentioning Renee Good's death in Minneapolis.

Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot by ICE agent Jonathan Ross on January 7 during a federal immigration operation.

The shooting triggered massive protests across Minneapolis as Trump deployed 2,000 federal agents to the city as part of his administration's crackdown on illegal immigration.

Federal officials maintain Ross acted in self-defense when Good tried to use her vehicle as a weapon against agents.

But Stanage asked Leavitt how Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem could claim ICE was "doing everything correctly" given the deaths.

Leavitt didn't answer his loaded question.

Instead, she turned it around on him with a simple query of her own.

"Why was Renee Good unfortunately and tragically killed?" Leavitt asked.

Stanage walked straight into the trap.

"Are you asking me my opinion?" he responded.

Leavitt Calls The Hill Reporter 'Left-Wing Hack' On Live TV

Leavitt confirmed she wanted his opinion.

That's when Stanage revealed exactly where he stood.

"Because an ICE agent acted recklessly and killed her unjustifiably," the reporter stated.

Leavitt pounced immediately with four devastating words: "You're a left-wing hack."

The press secretary didn't stop there.

"You're not a reporter. You're posing in this room as a journalist, and it's so clear by the premise of your question," Leavitt fired back.

She accused him and others in the media of having "such biases but fake like you're journalists."

"You shouldn't even be sitting in that seat," Leavitt continued.

The exchange lasted several minutes as Stanage tried to interrupt multiple times.

Leavitt kept hammering her point home about media bias masquerading as objective journalism.

"The question that you just raised and your answer proves you're biased," she stated.

She challenged him directly about whether he knew how many American citizens were killed by illegal aliens.

"I bet you don't. I bet you didn't even read up on those stories," Leavitt said.

She brought up Laken Riley and Jocelyn Nungaray, both young American women murdered by illegal aliens in 2024.

"The brave men and women of ICE are doing everything in their power to remove those heinous individuals and make our communities safer," Leavitt declared.

She ended by calling out media bias across the board.

"Shame on people like you in the media who have a crooked view, who have a biased view, and who pretend like you're real, honest journalists," Leavitt concluded.

Trump Press Secretary Continues Confrontational Media Strategy Like Kayleigh McEnany

The confrontation went instantly viral on social media with over 3.6 million views.

Conservative commentators praised Leavitt for taking on a hostile press corps.

Fox News host Riley Gaines, who attended the briefing, called watching it in person "even better than watching it online."

"Karoline Leavitt is so so good at her job," Gaines wrote on X.

Conservative commentator Eric Daugherty declared Leavitt "SERIOUSLY the best."

"Her response to this insufferable 'reporter' proves why she is one of President Trump's greatest comms hires of all time," Daugherty posted.

The White House's Rapid Response account shared the clip with the caption: "@PressSec absolutely nukes a Fake News loser."

Leavitt's approach mirrors her predecessor Kayleigh McEnany's confrontational style from Trump's first term.

McEnany regularly sparred with reporters and accused the media of bias during daily briefings from 2020 to 2021.

Trump's first press secretary Sean Spicer also became famous for combative exchanges with reporters starting on day one when he defended inaugural crowd size claims.

The tradition of Trump press secretaries going on offense rather than playing defense clearly continues with Leavitt.

At 28 years old, she's already established herself as one of Trump's most effective communicators.

Left-wing media critics condemned the exchange as unprofessional.

Journalist Mehdi Hasan praised Stanage for asking "important questions" that "not enough people do" in the briefing room.

Democratic strategist Tom Bonier noted the irony that Leavitt attacked a Hill reporter while giving the first question to Riley Gaines, a conservative activist.

Tensions remain high in Minneapolis as ICE operations continue and protests escalate.

Trump threatened Thursday to invoke the Insurrection Act and deploy troops to Minnesota if violence against federal agents continues.

The clash between Leavitt and Stanage perfectly captures the battle lines drawn over Trump's immigration crackdown.
