Karoline Leavitt Called Democrats Exactly What They Are After 204 of Them Voted to Shut Down the Government

Jul 27, 2026

Democrats already gave America the two longest government shutdowns in history.

Now Karoline Leavitt just called them out for setting up a third.

204 House Democrats just told you exactly why they voted no – and it has nothing to do with the American people.

Democrats Voted No to Protect the Deportation Machine

House Republicans passed a simple continuing resolution Tuesday – clean, no poison pills, just keep the government funded through December.

The final tally was 220 to 205, with just six Democrats crossing the aisle.

Their stated reason: the bill "fails to block funding for Donald Trump's violent mass deportation machine."

Read that again.

Democrats are threatening a third shutdown because the bill does not defund Border Patrol – a department that is already funded through the rest of Trump's presidency regardless.

This is not a policy dispute.

This is Democrats holding federal workers hostage to protect illegal immigrants from deportation.

Leavitt Named Them Exactly What They Are

At Thursday's briefing, Karoline Leavitt did not soften it.

"This president and this White House wants the government to remain open, unlike the Democrats in this town who have been acting as obstructionists," she said.

She was not done.

"We've seen time and time again," Leavitt continued. "They have chosen to block this administration, to block Republicans in Congress from keeping our government open, which does not help anyone."

Speaker Mike Johnson said the same thing after the vote.

"Given that Democrats have already forced the two longest government shutdowns in American history this Congress," Johnson wrote on X, "it's clear they don't care what kind of pain they inflict on the American people or the hundreds of thousands of federal workers who would be forced to work without pay."

By March 2026, the House Appropriations Committee had tallied the wreckage: 93 total days of shutdown since October 2025.

Ninety-three days of federal workers protecting America without a guaranteed paycheck.

The Pattern Democrats Cannot Escape

The shutdown math is brutal for Democrats heading into November midterms.

Republicans passed a clean CR in September 2025 to keep the government open.

Democrats blocked it 14 times in the Senate, holding out for $1.5 trillion in new spending – demanding expanded entitlements, climate mandates, and cash assistance without work requirements.

When they finally caved in November, they got nothing.

They inflicted 43 days of damage – air traffic disrupted, food assistance cut off for low-income families, veterans locked out of counseling programs – and walked away empty-handed.

Now they are doing it again.

The only difference is the excuse.

Last time it was Obamacare subsidies.

This time it is refusing to let Border Patrol get funded.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has signaled he wants to craft a bipartisan stopgap – the same approach that let Democrats drag the first shutdown out for six weeks.

Trump's patience with that instinct is gone.

At a Georgia rally Wednesday night, he told the crowd to call Thune directly.

"He's the leader of the Republican Party," Trump said. "Tell him to get this stuff approved."

Leavitt echoed it at Thursday's briefing.

"His patience is running out," she said. "He wants to see as much of the SAVE America Act passed as possible by the August recess."

Thune pushed back: "Maybe she or somebody else ought to get on the phone and get the votes."

Then he said the quiet part out loud.

"Instead of pointing the finger at Republicans," Thune said, "they might think about going after the people who are stopping it on the floor, which is the Democrats."

Two hundred and four of them just proved it again.
