90-year-old Willie Brown was one of the power brokers in California politics for decades.
He served as Speaker of the California State Assembly for 14 years before he became the powerful Mayor of San Francisco.
And he helped launch the political career of Vice President Kamala Harris when she carried on a very public affair with him in the mid-1990s.
Harris was 29 and the married Brown was 60 at the time.
She launched her political career when she ran for San Francisco District Attorney in 2003 and beat an incumbent who was investigating Brown with the backing of his political network.
Brown faced multiple investigations but was never charged.
Harris – then a low-level prosecutor – received appointments to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board and then to the Medical Assistance Commission by Brown.
Those two lucrative positions paid her far more than her job as a prosecutor.
“Yes, I may have influenced her career by appointing her to two state commissions when I was Assembly Speaker,” Brown said in 2019. “And I certainly helped with her first race for district attorney in San Francisco.”
Kamala Harris could have a Hillary Clinton problem
Brown spoke with Politico now that his former girlfriend and protégé has risen through the ranks to become the Democrat Presidential nominee.
He worried that Harris would have a likeability problem similar to Hillary Clinton.
“Brown worried out loud that Harris had ‘the Hillary syndrome’ — that ‘people don’t like her’ — and fretted it was not fixable,” Politico reported.
Harris has taken heat for the far-left positions she took in the Senate and during her 2020 Presidential campaign like abolishing the filibuster to pass the Green New Deal, decriminalizing illegal border crossings, and a government takeover of the healthcare system.
Brown suggested that she take a page from former President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign and be everything to everybody.
“If she keeps people continually guessing, then she can adjust the interpretation of your guess every time she sees you,” Brown said.
Harris is the most unpopular Vice President in modern history based on her approval rating.
But her rating has ticked up after she entered the Presidential to great fanfare from Democrats and their media allies.
538 has her disapproval rating at 51% in the polling aggregate.
Clinton had a 56% disapproval rating in August 2016 according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll.
Muhlenberg Institute of Public Opinion director Chris Borick told the Sacramento Bee that Harris has a likeability problem.
“The very nature of the vice presidency presents a challenge in terms of connections with the public, and when you add in the intersection of Harris’s gender identity, multiracial background and California roots it seems a barrier to broad public acceptance is created,” Borick told the Bee. “These factors, along with her personal style, don’t easily mesh with many Americans’ comfort zone and Harris ultimately emerges with a classic likability problem.”
Kamala Harris is keeping a low profile on the campaign trail to avoid voters getting to know her outside the media creation.
