John Thune Donald Told Trump No and Now the SAVE America Act Is Dead in the Senate

Jun 14, 2026

Democrats have been stealing elections for years – and Republicans finally had a bill to stop it.

Now one Senate Republican is standing between Trump and the only law that could fix it.

Thune just went on Fox Business and told the country why proving you're a citizen before you vote will never become law – and he aimed the blame everywhere except the mirror.

The Harry Reid Holdover Still Running the Senate

Elizabeth MacDonough has been the Senate parliamentarian since 2012 – appointed by Harry Reid, kept in place by Mitch McConnell, and still ruling against Republicans today.

Trump called her a "Radical Left Lunatic" this week and posted on Truth Social demanding Thune fire her immediately.

"Senate Majority Leader John Thune should immediately fire the Parliamentarian, who treats Republicans, and everything that they stand for, horribly!" Trump wrote.

He's not wrong.

MacDonough spent the past year picking apart Trump's agenda piece by piece.

During the One Big Beautiful Bill, she struck down nearly 50 provisions – Medicaid restrictions, immigration enforcement, gun control rollbacks – everything that made the bill worth passing.

Then she blocked $1 billion in White House security funding, ruling it violated the Byrd Rule because it fell outside the Judiciary Committee's jurisdiction.

Now she's done it again – ruling the SAVE America Act can't travel through reconciliation because voter ID and proof of citizenship are "policy," not "budget."

The SAVE Act passed the House in February 2026.

It requires proof of citizenship to register to vote, photo ID to cast a ballot, and mandates states clean up their voter rolls.

Democrats have blocked it in the Senate at every turn – and MacDonough handed them the procedural weapon to do it.

Thune's Math Problem Is Actually a Spine Problem

Here's what Thune told Fox Business Wednesday.

"For me, it's a function of math."

He said Republicans don't have the votes to pass the SAVE Act even if MacDonough were gone – because the bill would still need 60 votes under Senate rules since it's principally policy, not budget.

He said nuking the filibuster is off the table too – "not even close" to having enough votes.

So Thune's answer to Trump's election security agenda is: we can't do it through reconciliation, we can't kill the filibuster, and we're not replacing the Harry Reid appointee blocking us.

Every door closed.

This is the same John Thune who beat Tom Cotton for majority leader by promising to move Trump's agenda through the Senate.

Republicans hold 53 seats.

Senate Republicans tried twice to attach the SAVE Act to the reconciliation package.

Lindsey Graham and Mike Lee both offered motions to waive the budgetary objections.

Both failed – because Susan Collins, Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, and Thom Tillis voted no.

Four Republicans decided proving you're a citizen before you vote is too much to ask.

Thune won't say their names out loud.

He won't pressure them.

He just calls it math and moves on.

That's your math problem, John.

Not Elizabeth MacDonough.

The Precedent Already Exists

Republicans demanding MacDonough's firing aren't asking for something unprecedented.

In 2001, Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott fired parliamentarian Robert Dove during a reconciliation battle.

It can be done.

It has been done.

The argument that firing her is off the table is a choice, not a rule.

In 2021, Democrats screamed to fire MacDonough themselves when she blocked their $15 minimum wage and their mass amnesty plan from reconciliation.

Back then, Republicans told Democrats to respect the process.

Now the shoe is on the other foot – and Thune is saying the same thing to Trump.

Why Democrats Are Terrified of This Bill

Here's what actually happens if the SAVE Act dies: Democrats run the 2026 midterms under the same rules they've been exploiting for years – no citizenship check, no real ID requirement, voter rolls that haven't been verified.

They take back the House.

Trump spends his final two years getting impeached for a third time instead of finishing the wall.

That's not a procedural outcome.

That's the whole ballgame.

Thune has 53 Republican senators and can't find 51 willing to protect American elections.

He calls that math.

Most people would call it a failure.

The umpire was hired by Harry Reid.

The majority leader keeping her was elected by Republicans.

That's the part Thune doesn't want to talk about.
