John Kennedy Asked Kristi Noem One Question That Ended Her Career

Mar 6, 2026

John Kennedy just torched one of his own.

The Louisiana Republican – famous for destroying witnesses with a single devastating question – sat across from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in Tuesday's Senate Judiciary hearing and asked her to explain a $220 million taxpayer-funded ad campaign starring herself.

Twenty-four hours later, she was fired.

The $220 Million No-Bid Ad Contract Kennedy Couldn't Ignore

Kennedy didn't come to play politics. He came with receipts.

He told Noem flat out that his research showed the contracts for those self-deportation ads – the ones featuring her on horseback at Mount Rushmore – never went through competitive bidding. He pointed out that Safe America Media, the primary contractor that pocketed $143 million, had been incorporated less than two weeks before DHS handed it the deal. He noted that most of the money then flowed to the Strategy Group, a firm whose CEO is married to Noem's former DHS spokeswoman, Tricia McLaughlin.

Then Kennedy asked the question that lit the fuse.

Did President Trump actually approve her spending $220 million on TV ads featuring herself?

Noem said yes – Trump knew about it and approved it before she was sworn in. The White House immediately called that claim false. A White House official told reporters point blank that the president did not sign off on the campaign. Not even close.

Trump, according to sources familiar with his thinking, was "pissed." He'd been frustrated with Noem for months over the Minneapolis shootings and sliding immigration poll numbers. Noem blaming him for a quarter-billion-dollar vanity project was the match that lit the powder keg.

By Thursday morning, Trump announced on Truth Social that Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin would take over at DHS effective March 31.

Kristi Noem's DHS Record: 670,000 Deportations and a 97 Percent Border Drop

Before the collapse, the record was real.

Noem's agency recorded more than half a billion pounds of illegal drugs seized. DHS reported 670,000 deportations and 2.2 million self-deportations during her tenure – numbers her defenders rightly called the most aggressive immigration enforcement operation in American history.

Rep. Clay Higgins, the Louisiana Republican and former cop, put it plainly during the House hearing: "Madam Secretary, you inherited a disaster, and you turned it around."

He's right. She did.

But the ad campaign exposed something that couldn't be defended. A company created 11 days before it received $143 million. A no-bid process justified through a national emergency declaration. Contractors connected to Noem's political inner circle going back to her 2022 South Dakota governor's race. And a top adviser – Corey Lewandowski – who internal DHS records show was signing off on major contracts while Noem told the Senate he had no role in approvals.

John Kennedy isn't a Democrat looking for scalps. He's a fiscal hawk who voted to confirm her. When he says a quarter-billion dollars of taxpayer money being shoveled to political allies is indefensible, that's not a partisan hit job. That's a Republican saying the quiet part loud.

Markwayne Mullin as DHS Secretary: What Changes and What Stays the Same

Trump isn't retreating from enforcement – he's recalibrating who executes it.

Mullin brings something Noem increasingly couldn't: zero personal scandal baggage. The Oklahoma senator – a former professional MMA fighter and the only Native American in the Senate – has spent his decade-plus in Congress as a relentless Trump loyalist. He physically confronted a protester who disrupted Trump's State of the Union address. He doesn't create headlines that pull focus from the mission.

That's the lesson buried in Noem's departure. Trump's immigration agenda – the record deportations, the ICE surges, the border wall – is not going anywhere. Democrats celebrating her firing are about to discover that Mullin isn't going to soften anything. What they're getting is the same relentless enforcement without the self-inflicted wounds that gave them ammunition.

Noem isn't disappearing either. Trump gave her a soft landing as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, a new Western Hemisphere security initiative the administration unveils this weekend in Doral, Florida. That's not a demotion into obscurity – it's Trump managing a loyal soldier out of a position where she'd become a liability.

The border stays sealed. The deportations continue. Democrats just lost their favorite punching bag – and got a replacement who doesn't miss.
