John Bolton Just Agreed to Plead Guilty and the Fine He Agreed to Pay Is Staggering

Jun 9, 2026

John Bolton spent years calling Donald Trump a threat to national security.

Now Bolton is the one who just admitted to keeping Top Secret national security documents in his Maryland home.

The man who attacked Trump on every cable news show that would book him just agreed to plead guilty to a federal felony – and the price tag is $2.25 million.

Bolton Kept Top Secret Files for Seven Years While Attacking Trump

The indictment tells the whole story.

From 2018 through August 2025, Bolton shared over a thousand pages of classified national security information with two unauthorized individuals through personal online accounts.

Those documents included intelligence about future attacks by a foreign adversary, details about a foreign country planning a missile launch, and sensitive intelligence about liaison partners sharing information with the U.S. intelligence community.

All of it is classified up to the TOP SECRET/SCI level.

Bolton also kept physical documents at his home in Montgomery County, Maryland.

And while all of this was happening, he was making the cable news rounds calling Trump dangerous.

Kash Patel Ran Down a Sitting National Security Threat

FBI agents raided Bolton's home and office in August 2025.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe provided Patel with the intelligence that justified the search warrant.

That October, Patel announced the indictment – 18 total counts, including eight counts of unlawful transmission and ten counts of unlawful retention of national defense information.

"The FBI's investigation revealed that John Bolton allegedly transmitted top secret information using personal online accounts and retained said documents in his house in direct violation of federal law," Patel said. "The case was based on meticulous work from dedicated career professionals at the FBI who followed the facts without fear or favor."

Bolton responded by calling it retaliation and pleaded not guilty in October.

Eight months later, he's pleading guilty to a felony and writing a $2.25 million check.

The Double Standard the Left Cannot Explain Away

Democrats spent four years screaming about classified documents.

They went to the mat for Hillary Clinton when she ran classified material through a private server.

They cheered Bolton when he turned on Trump and published The Room Where It Happened.

That book is now at the center of a federal felony guilty plea.

The comparison that stings most: David Petraeus did something nearly identical in 2015 – sharing classified diary material with his biographer – and pleaded guilty to a single misdemeanor, paid $100,000, and got probation.

Bolton is pleading guilty to a felony and paying 22 times what Petraeus paid.

Sandy Berger, Bill Clinton's national security adviser, literally stuffed classified documents in his socks and pants, smuggled them out of the National Archives, and later destroyed some of them with scissors – documents the 9/11 Commission had specifically requested.

Berger paid $50,000.

Bolton is paying $2.25 million.

The people who called Trump a fascist for promising accountability never had an answer for that arithmetic.

Now they have a federal guilty plea to explain.

The hearing is set for June 26 in Greenbelt, Maryland, where the judge will review the deal and impose the sentence.

Whatever that sentence turns out to be, one thing is already settled.

The man who spent years calling Trump a threat to democracy just admitted – in a federal courtroom, on the record – that he kept TOP SECRET national security documents in his house for seven years.

That's not a talking point.

That's a guilty plea.
