Texas’ electrical grid is being pushed to the brink by green energy and population growth
Green energy became a key political priority for Democrats under former President Barack Obama.
President Joe Biden has continued the push to switch the nation’s power to unreliable wind and solar.
Texas has bought into the green energy revolution push from the federal government.
Despite having a Republican state government, Texas added more solar power last year than California.
The federal government has created a system to nudge states to adopt green energy.
And that could spell disaster for the entire country.
Texas has added more residents than any other state in the country since 2020, with an estimated population gain of at least 1.3 million.
New residents and increasing reliance on green energy are pushing the state’s electric grid to the brink.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) – which oversees Texas’ electrical grid – is forecasting a 12% chance of rolling blackouts during the day this summer because of increased summer demand.
Texas experiencing blackouts has serious national implications.
Oil and gas industry expert David Blackmon told the Daily Caller News Foundation that Texas losing power would affect the state’s oil and gas industry.
“There’s no question that a failure of the Texas grid would have disastrous national implications,” Blackmon explained. “Texas is home to one of the biggest industrial bases in the U.S., and those operations supply goods and equipment to national markets. They all rely on the grid to remain in operation.”
An electric grid failure in Texas would spike energy prices for the country.
“Also, electricity is the single biggest cost element for the oil and gas industry, which provides about a third of both oil and gas to the country, not to mention a large portion of refined products, plastics, fertilizers and other products derived from petroleum,” Blackmon continued. “A failure of the Texas power grid would result in big cost increases to every American.”
Texas grid has struggled in recent years
Texas is the most important state to America’s energy industry.
It produces 42% of the country’s oil and 25% of its natural gas, according to the Energy Information Administration.
And Texas is home to 32 oil refineries that make gasoline, diesel, and other fuels.
The demand for electricity is expected to rise in the state as its population continues to grow.
“The ERCOT region is forecasted to experience tremendous electric demand growth in the next 5-7 years, which is driving the need for ERCOT to adapt and plan differently for the future,” an ERCOT spokesman said.
A heatwave last September had ERCOT on the brink, which caused the Biden administration to temporarily waive pollution rules to help the grid.
American Energy Institute CEO Jason Isaac put the blame for the situation at the feet of the federal government.
“We’re in this situation because of market-distorting policies, namely the federal Production Tax Credit, that favors unreliable, variable, weather-dependent generation over reliable generation from natural gas, coal, and nuclear,” Isaac said. “With Texas producing 40% of domestic oil production, refining at least 25% of our nation’s fuels and sending increasing amounts of natural gas to Mexico, a collapse of ERCOT would be devastating to Texas and the United States, and create pain for Mexico.”
