Late-night television spent years calling Donald Trump a fascist, a Nazi, and a threat to democracy.
On Thursday night, Jimmy Kimmel took it one step further.
Two days before a gunman rushed a Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton intent on killing administration officials, Kimmel stood in front of a studio audience and told them Melania Trump had the glow of "an expectant widow."
What Kimmel Said and What Happened Next
Kimmel's bit aired April 24 – a parody of the White House Correspondents' Dinner that Trump had agreed to attend in person for the first time while in office.
"Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow," Kimmel told his audience.

The crowd laughed.
Two days later, 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California, checked into the Washington Hilton, changed into black clothes, loaded a bag with a shotgun and a handgun, and used an interior stairwell to reach the level where Trump was seated at dinner.
Allen's own manifesto – sent to family members minutes before he charged the checkpoint – stated explicitly that he wanted to target officials in the Trump administration.
The Secret Service stopped him at the door.
One agent was struck by gunfire.
The bulletproof vest held.
The Left Has Said This Is Fine
When Trump survived the Butler, Pennsylvania assassination attempt in July 2024, late-night hosts fell over each other to condemn political violence.
"Violence has no role in our politics," Seth Meyers announced.
"Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent," Stephen Colbert added.
They said the right words, waited for the news cycle to cool, and went right back to doing exactly what they had been doing before.
Kimmel's "expectant widow" line is not a joke that someone writes by accident.
It requires a writer's room to pitch it, a host to approve it, a producer to green-light it, and a network – Disney's ABC – to air it.
Every one of those people made a choice.
Townhall editor Larry O'Connor saw it for what it was, posting on social media that Kimmel had become "a broken man" and tagging Disney directly.
O'Connor is not wrong – but he may be understating the problem.
Who Cole Allen Was
Allen donated $25 to Kamala Harris's presidential campaign in 2024.
He earned an engineering degree from Caltech – this was not a man who stumbled into radicalization.
Allen spent months planning this.
He traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago, then from Chicago to Washington.
He checked into the hotel the day before the dinner.
He found the stairwell.
A hotel guest staying near Allen told reporters that no one checked his luggage – not even at 5 p.m. on the day of the event – which explains how a disassembled long gun made it past the lobby.
The security gaps at the Washington Hilton were real.
But the question conservatives are asking is simpler than that.

Where did Cole Allen get the idea that killing Trump officials was the right thing to do?
The Pattern the Media Won't Name
The manifesto Allen sent his family called him a "friendly federal assassin" and described Trump using language that sounded like it came straight from a cable news chyron.
The Left will say the two things are unconnected.
They will point to Allen's mental state.
They will talk about radicalization ecosystems and online echo chambers – as though those communities built themselves from nothing.
Someone built them.

They built them with years of calling the president a rapist, a pedophile, a Nazi, and a traitor in front of millions of viewers every weeknight.
They built them with jokes about what a shame it would be if his wife became a widow.
That's not fringe rhetoric.
That's late-night television on Disney's ABC.
That's what the media machine fed Cole Allen, night after night, until he decided it was true enough to act on.
Jimmy Kimmel will be on television tonight.
He'll probably have some thoughts about what a dangerous moment this is for democracy.
