JD Vance Just Exposed the Man Democrats Chose to Destroy Michigan Auto Jobs

Aug 9, 2026

Michigan Democrats just picked a man who wants to abolish ICE over a woman who helped save the auto industry.

The guy they chose openly opposes the Trump tariffs that brought Chevy Blazer production back from Mexico.

Now JD Vance is making sure every autoworker in the state knows exactly what that means for their paycheck.

The Man Democrats Chose Over Manufacturing

Michigan Democrats had a choice Tuesday.

They could nominate Haley Stevens – a congresswoman who helped rescue the auto industry during the 2008 crash and made Trump's tariffs the centerpiece of her campaign.

They chose Abdul El-Sayed instead.

El-Sayed – a Rhodes Scholar, Oxford doctorate, Columbia-trained physician – ran on Medicare-for-all, campaign finance reform, and abolishing ICE.

He said nothing about protecting the auto industry.

He opposed the Trump tariffs that moved Chevrolet Blazer production from Mexico to Spring Hill, Tennessee.

Vance went on The Ingraham Angle Wednesday and named it directly.

"By flooding his state and his country with low-wage immigrants," Vance said. "Of course, those people will drive down the wages of the working class."

He mentioned young Americans specifically.

“I think what it tells us is that a lot of the young Americans were sold a whole promise at the elite universities in our country, and that promise is that they were going to be able to go to college, get a degree, and everything was going to work out fine for them,” Vance said.

“I think in reality, actually, a lot of universities sold these kids a bill of goods. They gave them a lot of debt. They did not give them useful skills or a useful credential. And a lot of these kids are very angry.”

What Redistribution Actually Means

El-Sayed doesn't call himself a socialist.

He calls himself a capitalist who wants Medicare-for-all, open borders, and corporate money banned from elections.

Vance has a different word for it.

"Limousine socialist."

The label fits a man who won a primary on a platform of wealth redistribution while opposing the tariff policies that kept assembly lines running in Michigan.

"They're not promising you industry," Vance said. "They're not promising you good jobs. They're not promising self-sufficiency in a good industrial economy. What they're promising is redistribution."

Sanders and AOC backed El-Sayed.

Stevens – who centered her campaign on manufacturing jobs and fought alongside Trump's trade agenda – lost.

The Democrat base made its values clear.

The November Problem Nobody in Detroit Is Talking About

Democrats chose a candidate who trails Mike Rogers by seven to ten points in head-to-head polling with independent voters.

Rogers – 46%, El-Sayed – 19% among independents in one recent survey.

That's not a gap.

That's a canyon.

The seat currently belongs to Democrats.

Gary Peters is stepping down.

Michigan went for Trump by 1.4 points in 2024.

El-Sayed's platform – abolish ICE, Medicare-for-all, oppose tariffs protecting auto jobs – is a general election liability in a purple state where autoworkers remember 2009 and don't need a lecture from a Columbia professor about economic justice.

Vance named it on The Ingraham Angle Wednesday with the clarity Democrats never will.

"It tells us that particular set of ideas is very popular in places you wouldn't expect," he said. "He's this guy who holds himself out as a working-class hero."

“El-Sayed, he’s this guy who holds himself out as a working-class hero, is a guy who’s going to fight for the working class,” he said, before adding that El-Sayed’s policies would hurt the state’s auto industry.

“He doesn’t have a constituency among the working class,” he added.

A working-class hero who wants to abolish the agency that deports criminal illegals.

That's who Michigan Democrats chose to speak for the guy on the floor of a GM plant.

The autoworker didn't get a vote in that primary – but he'll get one in November.
