JD Vance Asked Pope Leo XIV One Question About the Nazis That Has CNN Absolutely Melting Down

Apr 17, 2026

Pete Hegseth told the American people to pray for victory in Iran "on bended knee, in the name of Jesus Christ."

Then the first American Pope told the world that God is never on the side of those who drop bombs.

And JD Vance just walked into a Georgia college campus and asked the question that blew the whole thing wide open.

Vance Invoked Just War Theory and the Left Lost Its Mind

Standing in front of a Turning Point USA crowd at the University of Georgia Tuesday, Vance didn't just defend the Trump administration's foreign policy.

He took the fight straight to the Vatican's theological argument.

Pope Leo XIV had posted on social media that God "is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs."

Vance wasn't having it.

"When the pope says that God is never on the side of those who wield the sword, there is more than a thousand-year tradition of just war theory," he said.

Then he asked the question CNN has been playing on a loop since Tuesday night.

"Was God on the side of the Americans who liberated France from the Nazis? Was God on the side of the Americans who liberated Holocaust camps?"

His answer: "I certainly think the answer is yes."

The media called it arrogant, embarrassing, a vice president lecturing the Vicar of Christ on his own theology.

What they can't do is answer the question.

Pope Leo XIV Called the Iran War Unjust and Trump Fired Back

This fight didn't come from nowhere.

Pope Leo has spent months escalating his public criticism of the Trump administration – first on immigration, then on the Iran war, then on Trump's threat to destroy Iranian civilization, which the pope called "truly unacceptable."

When Trump fired back on Truth Social – calling Leo "WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy" – the media treated it as a scandal.

What they ignored is the sequence that got us here.

Hegseth had been invoking God to justify the Iran campaign for weeks, asking Americans to pray for military victory in the name of Jesus Christ.

Leo fired directly at that framing.

"Jesus is the king of peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war," the pope said on Palm Sunday.

That's a theological claim with enormous policy consequences.

It says the United States is wrong before God.

Vance responded the only way that argument deserved: with history.

Why JD Vance Had Every Right to Push Back on the Vatican

CNN and MSNBC have spent two days framing this as Trump and Vance attacking the pope.

That's not what happened.

The pope made a sweeping theological statement – that God is never on the side of those who wage war – and applied it directly to American foreign policy.

Vance pointed out that the Catholic Church has taught just war doctrine for over a thousand years.

The man the media is calling arrogant for questioning the pope's theology?

He chose St. Augustine as his patron saint.

The pope belongs to the Order of St. Augustine – the religious order founded in the name of the very theologian Vance cited.

They're in the same theological tradition.

They have a genuine disagreement about whether this conflict qualifies as a just war.

That's a real debate worth having.

What isn't a real debate is whether the vice president of the United States has the right to push back on a foreign institution – including the Vatican – when it makes moral pronouncements designed to constrain American foreign policy.

He does.

Vance said it plainly on Special Report Monday: "It would be best for the Vatican to stick to matters of morality and let the President of the United States stick to dictating American public policy."

That's not an attack on Catholicism.

That's the constitutional order.

The Question the Left Can't Answer

The media wants this to be a story about a president and a vice president embarrassing themselves by picking a fight with a beloved pope.

But Vance's question is still sitting there, unanswered.

When American soldiers crossed Normandy Beach. When they opened the gates at Auschwitz. When they stood between the Nazi war machine and the people it was trying to exterminate.

Was God on their side?

If the answer is yes – and of course it is – then Leo's blanket statement about those who wield the sword collapses.

Not because Trump said so.

Because the history of the 20th century said so.

The left is furious because Vance didn't cower.

He didn't apologize.

He answered a theological argument with a better theological argument – and the pope, for all his credentials, doesn't have a clean response.

Good luck finding that on CNN.
