James Carville once cracked a raw egg on his own head on national television after getting an election wrong.
Now the man who predicted John Kerry would carry 52 percent of the vote is back – and this time he says he knows exactly how to make Donald Trump leave the presidency.
His master plan involves Democrats winning the House in November – and then making Trump's life so miserable he voluntarily walks out.
The Ragin Cajun's Track Record on Predictions
Carville told the Politicon audience on Tuesday that if Trump still has "his wits about him," the president will choose to leave on his own because his life is going to be "so goddamn miserable, he won't know what to do."
This is the same James Carville who wrote a New York Times op-ed in October 2024 titled "Three Reasons I'm Certain Kamala Harris Will Win."
She did not win.
Carville admitted afterward that one of his three reasons was "just a feeling" – and that Trump's win forced him to "relearn the oldest lesson in politics."

Now he's back with a new feeling.
He's been predicting Democrats will pick up 25 to 45 House seats in November – and after the One Big Beautiful Bill passed, he upped it to 40-plus and called it a "mass extinction event" for the GOP.
Republicans, meanwhile, used redistricting to strengthen their positions in multiple states, including Virginia, where the state Supreme Court struck down a Democrat-drawn map and restored a more favorable GOP configuration.
The Strategy That Assumes Trump Will Simply Quit
What's genuinely remarkable here isn't that Carville wants Democrats to win the midterms.
It's that his entire theory of victory rests on the assumption that Donald Trump – the man who fought election results for years, who ran again after losing, who built an entire political movement around never surrendering – will simply get tired and walk away from the presidency.
Trump has spent his entire second term doing exactly what he told voters he would do.
He secured the border.
He cut regulations.
He passed the largest legislative package of his presidency.
He's the first president in modern history who ran on a second term and then actually delivered one.

And Carville thinks he'll quit because Democrats make him feel bad.
The Democrats who spent eight years – two separate terms – doing everything in their legal and institutional power to remove Trump from office, prosecute him, imprison him, and destroy him politically: those are the people Carville thinks will finally convince Trump that staying isn't worth it.
Trump has already answered this question.
He answered it in 2021. He answered it in 2023.
He answered it every single time Democrats predicted the next indictment, the next verdict, or the next scandal would finally be the thing that broke him.
It never was.
The Man Who Predicted 52 Percent Now Predicts Trump Will Just Walk Away
Carville told his Politicon audience they should embrace the "Trump Derangement Syndrome" label – wear it proudly, use it as fuel.
That's not a political strategy.
That's a motivational speech for people who have already made up their minds.
The strategist who helped Bill Clinton win the 1992 presidency by staying laser-focused on "the economy, stupid" has spent the last decade predicting Democrat victories that never materialized.

Kerry lost.
Hillary lost.
He called Trump a certain loser in June 2020 and told Republicans they needed to advise him to quit the race.
Trump won 74 million votes that November.
He predicted Harris would win. She lost by 86 electoral votes.
This is a man whose entire theory rests on Donald Trump being a quitter.
Donald Trump survived two impeachments, four criminal indictments, a federal conviction, an assassination attempt, and the full institutional weight of the American left for nine straight years – and James Carville thinks a House majority is going to make him pack his bags.
The American people who voted for Donald Trump twice deserve a better opposition than James Carville's feelings.
