Ilhan Omar’s Somaliland stance just exposed one ugly truth about her real loyalties

Dec 30, 2025

Billions of taxpayer dollars vanished while Ilhan Omar looked the other way.

Now her critics are connecting dots she desperately wanted to keep hidden.

And Ilhan Omar's Somaliland stance just exposed one ugly truth about her real loyalties.

Minnesota fraud scandal explodes as investigators uncover billions in losses

Minnesota is drowning in one of the largest welfare fraud scandals in American history.

Federal prosecutors dismantled a $250 million scheme tied to the "Feeding Our Future" case, which resulted in 78 indictments and dozens of convictions.

But FBI Director Kash Patel described this as just "the tip of a very large iceberg."

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson dropped a bombshell during a December press conference when he predicted fraud losses across Minnesota's social programs could exceed $9 billion.

The scandal gained explosive new attention over Christmas weekend when independent journalist Nick Shirley posted viral videos showing shuttered daycare centers that had billed taxpayers millions while appearing to serve zero children.

One Minneapolis facility called "Quality Learning Center" couldn't even spell "learning" correctly on its sign yet received $1.9 million in 2025 alone and $4 million total in state funding.

When Shirley approached the building on a weekday, he found no children visible, the office appeared closed, and a woman at the site loudly accused him of being with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"This is a prime example of the billions of dollars in fraud happening right now in Minnesota," Shirley said in his video.¹

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent deployed personnel to Minnesota to investigate after the videos went viral, signaling the Trump administration views this as a national crisis requiring immediate action.

Omar's MEALS Act weakened safeguards that fraud rings exploited

Ilhan Omar has defended her support for the MEALS Act, legislation critics say systematically weakened oversight safeguards that fraudulent operators later exploited to steal hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars.

The congresswoman authored and championed the 2020 bill that loosened federal requirements for child nutrition programs during COVID-19.

What Omar sold as pandemic relief became a blueprint for organized theft.

Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, argues the corruption scandal allegedly involving Somali communities in Minnesota mirrors decades of governance failures that have plagued Somalia.

"The corruption exposed in Minnesota mirrors the governance failures that have plagued Somalia for decades," Rubin told Fox News Digital.²

But Rubin highlighted a stark contrast between corrupt Somalia and the breakaway region of Somaliland that Omar has consistently opposed recognizing.

"Somaliland has charted a different course entirely, relying on internal accountability rather than international assistance and that distinction matters right now," Rubin explained.³

While billions vanished in Minnesota through the programs Omar championed, Somaliland built democratic institutions and maintained internal security for more than three decades without international welfare handouts.

The region established its own currency, conducted multiple free elections, and created functioning government accountability systems.

Omar puts Somali clan politics ahead of American interests

Rubin made an explosive claim about where Omar's true loyalties lie.

"Ilhan Omar left Somalia, but Somalia never left her," Rubin stated bluntly.⁴

He pointed to Omar's Somali-language speeches where she refers to Somalia as her home, not America.

Omar has consistently opposed U.S. recognition of Somaliland, even as the region positions itself as a stable democratic partner that could serve American strategic interests in the Horn of Africa.

Israel became the first country to formally recognize Somaliland on December 26, 2025, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu describing the move as being "in the spirit of the Abraham Accords."⁵

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi immediately signaled his nation wants to join the Abraham Accords, positioning the region as a potential partner for U.S. and Israeli interests.

Rubin argued Omar's opposition to recognizing Somaliland is driven by internal Somali clan politics rather than U.S. strategic interests.

"Clan dynamics shape Somali politics, and that same lens appears to inform her position on Somaliland," Rubin said.⁶

"American interests don't appear to factor prominently into that calculation," he added.

President Trump told the New York Post in August he was "looking into" Somaliland recognition and would "study" Netanyahu's pitch.

"We'll study it. I study a lot of things and always make great decisions, and they turn out to be correct," Trump said.⁷

Netanyahu is expected to discuss Somaliland with Trump this week during meetings at Mar-a-Lago focused on regional security matters.

The contrast couldn't be more obvious between corrupt Somalia that has received billions in U.S. aid with nothing to show for it, and self-sufficient Somaliland that built a functioning democracy without international welfare.

Omar spent her congressional career defending the failed state of Somalia while attacking the breakaway region that actually works.

She opposed policies that would legitimize Somaliland even as the region demonstrated it could be a reliable American partner.

Meanwhile back in Minnesota, fraud investigators are still counting how many billions of taxpayer dollars disappeared through the programs Omar created with her MEALS Act.

The American people elected representatives to serve American interests, not advance the clan politics of failed African dictatorships.

Omar's position on Somaliland reveals she never stopped thinking like a Somali politician who happens to hold an American congressional seat.
