Remember when Democrats blocked the SAVE Act in the Senate last year?
They celebrated like they'd won the war on election integrity.
House Republicans just proved them spectacularly wrong with a bill that resurrects everything Democrats spent 2025 fighting against.
MEGA Act Brings Back Citizenship Verification Democrats Tried To Bury
House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil rolled out the Make Elections Great Again Act on Thursday – citizenship verification, voter ID nationwide, mail ballot restrictions, and paper ballot requirements all in one package.
The Wisconsin Republican brought back Chip Roy's citizenship check provision that Democrats killed in the Senate.
Then he added photo ID requirements at every polling place in America.
Then he banned states from automatically mailing ballots to all registered voters.
Then he eliminated ranked-choice voting in federal elections and required paper ballots instead of electronic systems.
Every single reform Democrats blocked last year, now combined into one bill, all before November's midterms.
The timing isn't accidental – Republicans are done waiting for Senate cooperation on election integrity.
Elon Musk's $291 Million Bought Republicans' Biggest Election Reform Push
Here's what nobody's talking about – this bill exists because Elon Musk wouldn't shut up about citizenship verification.
After his falling out with Trump, the world's richest man spent months demanding the Senate pass Roy's SAVE Act.
He cut massive checks to GOP campaigns, attended dinners with Vice President JD Vance and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and made election integrity his price for continued funding.
The MEGA Act is Republicans' answer – everything Musk wanted, plus the voter ID laws and mail restrictions Trump's demanded since 2020.
Democrat groups claim these requirements disenfranchise minority voters, while the Heritage Foundation points out voter ID polls as popular across demographics.
Steil framed the reforms as "easy to vote, but hard to cheat" – exactly the soundbite that drives Democrats crazy because voters actually agree with it.
Mail-In Ballot Rules And Ballot Harvesting Restrictions Hit Democrats' Ground Game
The mail voting changes hit Democrats where they've built their ground game.
No state can send ballots automatically anymore – voters must request them.
That kills universal mail systems Democrats rolled out during COVID and kept permanent in blue states.
Ballots must physically arrive by the close of polls on Election Day – no more "postmarked by" loopholes that let votes trickle in for days.
Third parties can't collect your completed ballot and deliver it anymore, ending what Republicans call ballot harvesting and Democrats call voter assistance.
States must also maintain current voter rolls and use paper ballots that can be audited.
Republicans control the House and they're implementing these changes before midterms where historical trends predict they'll lose seats.
If they're going down, Democrats are winning under rules that verify citizenship and require identification.
The irony?
If Senate Democrats had passed Roy's citizenship bill last year, Republicans might not have gone nuclear with legislation that does everything at once.
