Harrison Ford just revealed one marriage secret that will make you believe in love again

Aug 31, 2025

Hollywood marriages crash and burn faster than a bad action movie sequel.

But Harrison Ford just proved that some things in Tinseltown are still worth believing in.

And the 83-year-old legend just revealed one marriage secret that will make you believe in love again.

The Indiana Jones star dropped some surprising wisdom about lasting love

Harrison Ford sat down with NPR’s Wild Card and dropped some truth bombs about his 15-year marriage to Calista Flockhart that would make most relationship counselors jealous.¹

The guy who gave us Han Solo and Indiana Jones had something pretty remarkable to say about love at 83 years old.

"Old people can love, too," Ford told host Rachel Martin with that trademark dry wit we’ve come to expect from him.

But here’s where it gets interesting – and where Ford showed he’s got more wisdom than half the so-called experts out there.

"You think about falling in love and all of that business," Ford continued. "You think it’s the business of youth or something, you know, and staying in love is the issue. Maintaining, nurturing, basically, not f***ing up."

When the host mentioned that couples work on relationships every day, Ford added his own little caveat: "With some days off for bad behavior."

Now that’s refreshing honesty from someone who’s been around the block a few times.

Ford’s journey to finding real love proves it’s never too late

Here’s what makes Ford’s story even better – this guy didn’t figure it all out on his first try.

Ford married his first wife, Mary Marquardt, when he was just 23 back in 1964.

"If you ask me, I would say all my life. I was married for the first time at 23 years of age, which should be illegal," Ford joked about the length of his current marriage.

That first marriage lasted 15 years before ending in 1979.

Then came marriage number two to screenwriter Melissa Mathison in 1983, which lasted until 2004.

But when Ford met Calista Flockhart at the 2002 Golden Globe Awards, something clicked.

The former Ally McBeal star was 60, Ford was pushing 80, and Hollywood probably thought they were both crazy.

They proved everyone wrong when they married in Santa Fe, New Mexico on June 15, 2010.

The secret sauce that keeps Hollywood’s most unlikely couple together

Here’s what Ford figured out that most people never do – love isn’t just about the butterflies and romance.

It’s about not screwing up what you’ve got.

Ford proposed to Flockhart during a family vacation over Valentine’s Day weekend in 2009, and they got married in Santa Fe, New Mexico on June 15, 2010.

But here’s the part that really shows you what kind of man Ford is – he adopted Flockhart’s son Liam, who she had welcomed through adoption in 2001 as a single parent.

"She’s a mother by choice — she adopted Liam before we met, as a single parent, which is an awesome responsibility to take," Ford said in a 2008 interview. "She’s devoted herself to Liam and has done a really wonderful job raising him. I’m happy to now have a part of the job."

That’s not Hollywood talking – that’s a man who understands what real commitment looks like.

What Ford’s marriage teaches us about what really matters

You want to know what this really means?

In a town where marriages are treated like movie contracts – temporary and negotiable – Ford and Flockhart just celebrated 15 years together.

Ford’s got five kids total – two with his first wife, two with his second, and now Liam, now 23, through adoption.

At 83, he’s still talking about love like a man who just figured out the secret to happiness.

"Romantic love is one of the most exciting and fulfilling kinds of love, and I think there is a potential for it at any stage of your life," Ford told Hello! magazine back in 2003.

Here’s the thing that makes Ford different from most of Hollywood – he’s not trying to be 30 again.

He’s embracing being 83 and married and happy about it.

"She’s brought a child back into my home," Ford said about Flockhart and Liam. "It’s a wonderful opportunity to be part of a child’s growing up, which is always an endless springtime. You see the blossoming and the growing and the nurturing and the payoff."

That’s a man who figured out that success isn’t about how many movies you make or how much money you have.

It’s about who’s sitting next to you at the end of the day.

And at 83, Harrison Ford is still proving that real love – the kind that lasts – isn’t just for kids.

It’s for anyone smart enough to know a good thing when they see it and mature enough not to mess it up.
